off road tire/ snow tires
I'm looking for something more than an all season tire for my x5. I've been told there is a big difference between snow and off road tires. Does anyone know the details of this?
Where do I find some 17 inch rims for my x5 4.4? What rim width should they be? And finally, what choices do I have for tires? |

There is a HUGE difference between snow tires and all-seasons, and an even bigger difference between snows and off-roads.
SUV drivers get lulled into a false sense of security because all wheel drive gives you much better acceleration on snow or ice, regardless of the tires being used, but average performance in other areas. What people tend to forget is that stopping power and cornering ability in an AWD is no better than in a regular vehicle (although those lucky enough to have X-Drive have a big advantage when it comes to cornering). Once you put snow or ice tires on your vehicle, you will be absolutely astounded by how much better your stopping ability is, and since AWD drivers tend to overdrive the conditions quite often the difference in tires can save you from a serious accident, or even something as simple as dinging another car as you're turning into a parking stall in slippery conditions (very common with automatic transmissions; not so much with standards). Tire Rack is definitely one of the best places to quickly look up available tires for your vehicle. |
Those of us on the US Gulf Coast can ignore all these discussions of snow tires.
Now, if they come up with "Hurricane Tires"....:) |

Size wise, the OEM BMW 17" rim is 7.5", the offset is ET 40, and the tire size is 235/65 R17 |
dm: Dunno what you mean by "offroad tires for X5", vs. dedicated snow or the std tires that come with it. T Rack does sell some knarly off road tires, though few here take it off road severely.
Not to pump my stuff, because the set will move sooner or later, but here's my post from the "For Sale Forum", on this site...17" OEM w/snow tires. GL,md http://www.xoutpost.com/showthread.php?t=4679 |
Get Nokian Tires for the snow... They're absolutley Amazing.
