Driving at redline?
What amount of time does your engine see redline? If I hit redline on my 4.4 its less than 5 times a year. I try to make a point of reving the engine occasionally to blow deposits off of the valves, but rarely above 4500 RPM. But unless I work at it my engine never sees more than 3500 RPM. At what RPM does the VANOS advance the valves?

I spend more time at redline than I do at idle... I can't even count how many times it is at redlined in a day...

I probably hit red line more than 5 times during a trip last week.
Not sure about the VANOS question. |
VANOS switchover is around 4,000 RPM on the 4.4.

I'm pretty sure VANOS continuously adjusts valve timing. Lift is a fixed.
EDIT: VANOS switches the intake timing at 4,000rpm. All the X5 engines though use Double-VANOS, which is continously variable. |
VANOS adjusts the timing of the valves; advancing them at increased RPM. Valvetronic adjusts the lift.
