Mystery Solved!
I was about to post for help regarding my gf 2001 X5 4.4. She came home and said her car stalled after getting off the freeway. She said she came to a light and the car stalled. She restarted and stalled again. Of course she did not pull over but drove home. When I checked the engine, I heard the dreaded 'marble' sound on the left side of the engine. No lights on inside, oil was ok? Waited till the next day and started the engine and when it started a LOUD GRINDING noise. I mean loud enough for the neighbors to look. Shut it off and scratched my head. Good news I thought was it cant be a deep engine issue since I would not have 2 different sounds and this 2nd one was outside. Anyhow, long story short, I took the belt off (had to cut it since I did not have my tools) and turned it on. No more noise. Checked the pullys and found it was the alternator. It was charging but the bearing are completely shot. The stress must have stalled the engine. Anyhow, good news. Figured I'd post in case this happens to someone else. Thanks guys!
Now to remove the alt! :)
