power steering fluid quick question

Hi,
i just got my x5 3.0 a couple of weeks ago and do not have the workshop manual yet. My PS is low and i want to add some in when the ATF in cold. It looks and smell like ATF but just wanted to know if a castrol DIII would work for the future. I have a lot for my 93 range rover so it would be nice not to buy another type (to many mods i need for the X).
Question:
The PS fluid is ATF dexron III?

I have some Lucas Power Steering treatment so i will top it off w/ that for now to give the Steering unit a good coating.

Thanks

Mine use Dextron III...
BUT
give your dealer part guy a call to make sure, tell him the last 7 digit of VIN number (dash-board, door or even insurance card list this) to be sure.
With so many different fluids it'll better be safe than sorry.

FYI.
I called my part guy @ dealer and he said for 4.4i 2002 X5, they don't carry ps fuild and recommend any Dextron III compatible. Mine been fine after 3 years, "turkey baster" flushed.

Thanks for your info! I just topped it off w/ Lucas Power Steering treatment this morning to give the unit a nice coating and to be on the safe side. I will give the dealer a call today about the Dextron III before adding any. I am kind of upset that the BMW dealer did not check the fluids before selling the '01 X to me like i asked (but reading hear it seem they do that a lot). The oil was 1/2 full, PS was at the min mark, washer fluid was 1/2 full (washer fluid is not a big deal to me). They did give me new carpet floor mats (black w/ BMW logo on drivers side), fixed the back window shade, and found me a cargo cover in the pastell green color.

The last time i did a flush (putting a new resv tank in) on my dads 1991 Range Rover i used a transfer fluid pump, which also worked great. The turkey baster sounds like another good way! Also it's good to move the steering wheel all the way to the right and then left to get out any air in the PS unit after refilling it up. I learned that from a old tech.

Thanks again!
