Dead Pixels on NAV screen
Searched and saw a couple of references of dead pixels on the nav screen and being able to ship the screen or unit to Alpine to get it repaired. Does anyone have more information on that, where to send it to etc.
I have some greyed out/dead pixels that seems to be spreading, taking up about 1/4" x 1 1/4" area of the screen. Don't want to have to buy a whole new factory nav unit to get the screen back. |
Depending on the year of your vehicle BMW has been replacing them. Your search should have brought up that recourse. Try again

I am aware of a replacement/repair program for the gauge cluster pixel problem. I haven't seen anything on the nav screen replacement.
I have searched on 'display' 'nav' 'lcd' 'alpine' 'pixels' The only thing returned is information on the gauge cluster repair. |
OOps
akadel your right.... MY bad |
It's ok, I know how much pleasure the 'use search' folks derive from rubbing n00bs faces in it.
Don't worry, you'll get em next time. |
Oh that wasn't my intent at all.
I was honestly trying to be helpful So much for my help LOL |

There is no solution to solve the dead pixel on NAV screen. You have to replace the screen to get the screen back.
|
Thanks for the response, I figured it can't be fixed. Is there a part number for just the screen? Where can I buy a replacement screen?
|
4:3 screen or 16:9 screen? LHD or RHD?
|
2002 4.6is, LHD, 16:9
|
The part number for LCD screen of 16:9 onboard monitor is 65 52 6 934 416.

Even if it's out of waranty they may offer to pick part of the tabs. I feel you have to be the original owner(bought the car brand new), it helps if you bought another BMW recently;) (some sort of loyal BMW customer get something back). But again it all depends cause the car is out of waranty anyway. Good luck. |
Any news on the best price out there and source for the LCD?
|
I had mine replaced under warranty yesterday. BMW price for the unit was $2,494.00.
|
Can be had for $800 new from this guy. I have purchased several high ticket items from him with no issues and always fast shipping.

For those out of warranty with the problem, you have to ship the unit to
Alpine Electronics of America 2012 Abalone Ave., Unit D Torrance, CA 90501 800-421-2284, Ext. 860304 with your contact information and they can repair/replace the screen. I will be doing that this week, will post back the results/cost. |

Bump for any new information on getting the navigation screen fixed.
|
My Nav is at Alpine right now. I'll post my experiences here when I get it back.

Update:
Called Alpine in Torrance on the 28th to inquire about an estimate, confirm they received it etc. They claimed that they had no record of receiving it. Delivery confirmation on the USPS web site said that it had been delivered on the 24th. I decided to let the issue go through the weekend, all the while worried it was "lost" and I'd have to fight with them re: getting them to pay for a new one. Yesterday morning (Sat) I got a call from a tech in New Jersey telling me he had my unit and I needed to send them a check for $320 for a new LCD screen. So I am. I mentioned that Torrance told me they never received it and he basically told that they are all F&*^%ed up all the time. So what happened is that they did receive the item, and then sent it to NJ without making any notation in their system as such. So, contrary to what I was told, all these units are fixed in Jersey and not Torrance. I will post more when I get my unit back. |
This is my first post. I hope you guys find this info helpful.
Instead of spending $500 buying a used navigation LCD or $1200 buying a new one. You can try to replace just the LCD. I had a navigation LCD with dead pixels and grey spots. I followed the instruction posted under navigation->topic 15. Went one step further and detach the LCD screen (4 more screws and two cables). The LCD screen is a Sharp LQ065T9BR51 (or minor variations). Spent a lot of time googling and found a reseller in China that sell this LCD. They are willing to sell one unit instead of the standard 500 unit lot. They also take paypal and will ship the unti to you relatively fast using DHL. Seller:www.kecotech.com Cost: $165 including shipping LCD: LQ065T9BR53U (New revision works exactly the same as the old one) |
Too late for me to go a different route, but my understanding is that the screens all have slightly different viewing properties based on the angle the driver is looking at them from. For example, the X5 screen would not be as clear in a 7 series car. There have been posts in which people have tried to address this problem, I'm not sure where they are.

I got my Nav unit back from NJ and it is perfect -- works great. Cost me $320 which is a lot less than the dealership.
