x5 4.4 alternator price

outside of dealer (who i have yet to call), but i got about 900 to 1300 from two shops.

agree or disagree? any price points?

1. dealer? (yes, i will call. they always want me to bring it in before they quote me anything....)
2. previous experiences? 3rd party price?

Thanks!

been looking around at threads. really? 200 a pop plus like 200 for labor? is my guy jackin me???

It may be a different current rating, but I picked up a new alternator from Ebay for $225 shipped (for my 2001 330). It took me less than 25 minutes to install too. The X5's seem pretty easy as well.

There are deals out there. You may be able to find a remanufactured one (Bosch) from Autozone or Napa for around the $350-400 price range.

Good luck,
Daniel

last call out - he said that the alternator has some sort of coolant feature which is why it is so expensive

Edit... Here is a link to your alternator. It is liquid cooled...

are rebuilt alternators ok?

Bimmer Ese 07-16-2008 08:42 PM

Yes they are Some even come with a warranty.

$436 at Bavauto, includes $60 refundable core. It'll take longer than 30 minutes to replace, but is nowhere as difficult as others have described.

Ike,
are you doing maintenance or this alternator fails already on you?
Thanks.

Thanks.

Mine died heading to a football game last year, transmission default program the whole nine then system failure.

Towing was free with my insurance company but paid 1200 for it at the dealer. They broke my electronic thermostat which they replaced no charge, they said that is a 200 part, so be carefull. The dealer said has to be replaced from the bottom of the car.

it already failed. tow truck tested by charging my car for 20 minutes. it ran for about 30 min and then died again. batttery is brand new (5 days) so its not getting charged.

724+tax for a rebuilt bosch and labor....

not great, but dealer was well over a grand.

Thanks for the info.

Yep, dealer is like, "1000 dollar store". anything there starts at $1000:p:

swissfrank 07-18-2008 03:51 PM

just bring it to an alternator place to have it fixed for you $40-$140 vs $725 part.

Bushman2 07-18-2008 04:44 PM

It was about the same thing for me. The only difference is that I had the Extended coverage on the vehicle, so I only paid my deductable. The alternators are very expensive though for the simple fact that coolant does flow through them.
