cool mod, i think the imola red guy from seattle did the roof rail delete before. How hard is it to remove it? Cool gauges! very nice!

mrbmwx5 07-15-2008 01:34 PM

to remove the rails it take 10min.used 10mm socket and T40 tox and the cover plugs got it from LOWES hardware.

total cost $ 6.49 + 10min of my time.

Vincenzo Veyron 07-15-2008 03:33 PM

pretty bold looking X! i like it...

NOVAX5 07-15-2008 03:39 PM

mrbmwx5, is your flag the wrong one?

mrbmwx5 07-15-2008 03:43 PM

you mean the flag on my avatar? or the one on my dastboard?

RichiRich 07-15-2008 03:53 PM

The rail removal looks great! Is that all done from the outside....in otherwords.....you did not have to pull the roof liner on the inside??!?!?

RR:thumbup:

it done from the out side ( on top of the roof )
get your self up there and pop out the plastic cover the nuts and screws then use the T40 tox and 10mm socket it can be done in 10min. - 15min.

jayjay_dee 07-15-2008 04:26 PM

RichiRich 07-15-2008 04:30 PM

Tom,

I have been researching the roof rail delete way back when alpinem6 did his with the imola red......one pic i have not yet seen is the actual close upof the top of the roof with the plugs in it.....when you get a chance could you post a few pics of close up of what it looks like with the plugs in from ontop.......Since I have titanium silver I want to be sure that the plugs look ok or I might go with what Justin did on his (he used the plastic adhesive covering they use so your paint will no chip due to road rash....)

Thanks!!

That looks very nice. I'm thinking of doing it as well now. Can you post a before and after pic from one side. Don't gotta but if you could it would be great. thanks.

Essam Khafagi 07-16-2008 03:41 AM

i did the same with the roof rails long time ago :)
it gives the X a completely different look

PersonaNonGrata 07-16-2008 05:13 AM

Very nice. I must say though, that the roof rail delete looks better with your ACS style roof spoiler.

My rails are all dull looking after 6 years in the sun. Maybe time to delete them. :dunno:

2006E53 10-15-2008 09:06 PM

I really like the roof rail delete, what size are the plugs needed to fill the bolt holes and what are they made of rubber or plastic?

MINIz guy 10-15-2008 09:50 PM

Do you need to seal the plugs or do they fit well enough that no water will leak through?

mrbmwx5 10-16-2008 10:36 AM

You need 8 of 11/16 and 2 of 5/8 and put some silicone around the plugs and snap it in

simply x 10-16-2008 12:38 PM

to the OP: not feeling it...sorry...now your truck looks like a station wagon =)

I did this on my 4.8 and it really changes the character of the car... I prefer to think that it looks LESS like an SUV than 'more like a station wagon'. When the suspension is at full drop, it does look like a bit like a cross between a 5er wagon and an X5 though. Maybe it does have an identity crises.

If you like the utilitarian look, then leave them on. I prefer the sleeker Euro look myself.

Freddy 10-21-2008 01:26 AM

where do i get these plugs? what exactly are they?

Freddy 10-21-2008 01:28 AM

what is T40 tox and what are they cover plugs for?

Did this years ago on the first X5, did it recently on the current X5. Finding this exact post though took me forever. Mods,, can we get this tagged/moved to the how-to section so people can know exactly what they need to delete the roof racks from a-z.

KyleNatolix5 10-09-2013 09:19 PM

Very nice, is that an AC Schnitzer wing spoiler?

Ricky Bobby 10-09-2013 09:33 PM

its the rep spoiler, no one spends 450 bucks for the real thing unless you're crazy! 100 bucks pre-painted from Ebay, can't go wrong with it!
