Folding Mirror problem

Can anyone help me. I am having a problem with my power folding mirrors on e53. When I press the button, they fold in but then pop straight back out again. I have tried a new switch, but still get the problem. I have noticed that the passenger side mirror is a little loose. Could this have anything to do with it and how do I tighten it? It is loose at the joint where the mirror folds. Thanks for any help, Im a new X5 owner and new to X5 world

Welcome to the Forum!

Search for "folding mirrors". you' ll find your answer.

A small DIY in every mirror, no more that 30 minutes for an amateur and you can also tighten the loosen mirror (three torx screws under the cover).

Had the same problem before, took it back to the dealer and they replaced both mirrors under warranty and the problem was fixed.

My mirrors are now working. Thanks for your help. The place I bought the car couldnt fix the mirrors when I took it back. They were going to order a new control unit. I cant wait to tell them I have fixed it myself. This site is brilliant.

i have the same problem when i press the button it get inside then immediately reurn back!!! exactly Plz how did u fix it :dunno:

garykerry1 08-17-2008 07:39 PM

Just open the mirror covers (this is the hardest part be careful not to snap the fixings as a bit of force is required) Inside the mirror is another covr that houses a microswitch that is activated by the mirror folding. The microswitch lever has probably come away from the microswitch. You just clip the metal lever back on to the microswitch body. You will have to check both mirrors, as both need to be functional for it to work.

where are you experts from this thread!!!

Did you try this fix:

"This is a very common problem and sometimes a nightmare to diagnose but because one mirror being faulty generally effects the other. This usually leads to replacing the incorrect mirror. The problem lies within the micoswitch inside the mirror.

If you're feeling confident and fairly brave you could attempt this quick fix but I accept no responsibility for anything you break.......

Remove the painted mirror back very carefully (you need something thin and strong to get behind it but be careful as these are easily damaged). This will reveal a blue wire and a white wire which are connected to a small black plastic box which contains the microswitch for the folding mirrors. Remove this cover and there's a U shaped piece of metal inside, straighten this a tiny bit and operate the mirrors. Keep trying this (without breaking it) until they fold ok everytime."

ThanX X5 Meister for the info, I will try this on my car.

this made me feel worried to do it and search for pictures presenting it :dunno:

Then don't do it and take it to your dealer to fix.

Had the same problem. Took it to the shop and was told that there is a problem with the microswitch and the mirror replacement unit cost ~US$500 (excluding the cover and mirror which will be use back). I thought, what the heck, it is a long Easter Weekend, I might as well have a crack at it. Got the cover out and gave the internals a good clean - it was very dusty. I suspect the shop did not bother to check properly. The microswitch was perfectly alright. After some try and error, I got it working intermittently without having to bend the metal piece on the microswitch. Eventually, slipping a piece of felt to hold/tighten the microswitch in place fixed the problem. I think the design is bad in the sense that the tolerance is so refine as to either render the mirror working or not working :dunno:. Everything works now :D.

My X5 http://tur-www1.massey.ac.nz/~cteo/X5_1.JPG . I know, just another X5 but this one has travel a fair distance from USA to get here in The Land of the Long White Cloud.

X5 Meister 04-13-2009 05:16 AM

Great info. Did you take any pics of the fix?

redvault 04-13-2009 05:32 AM

Sorry, I did not have a camera handy. I have got as far as "lifting" the whole mirror unit off after unscrewing the three torx screws - thus exposing the motor unit. This was not necessary. The microswitch can be gently lever off from its "enclosure" and check whether it is faulty or not. If the mirrors can be electrically folded in and out, I can't see how the shop could not just replace the microswitch! All the rest of the mirror mechanical parts appear to be solidly build except for the microswitch - the metal piece hinge is, at best, dodgy. And replacing the microswitch should only take a couple of minutes once you managed to get the mirror cover off.

X5 Meister 04-13-2009 05:43 AM

Great notes. Do you know the p/n of the microswitch?

redvault 04-14-2009 06:44 AM

Sorry, no again. If I do open the other mirror for cleaning, I will remember to write down the part number and take some pictures. http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...irror-led.html (3rd image) show a good photo of the mirror motor casing (note the three torx screws) and next to it the plastic piece is where the microswitch is encased - you can lever it and it will slide out showing the microswitch.

mine is going in for new ears on Tuesday! do you now if they replace hole housing including the black trim know?

ashrafkh 05-09-2009 05:56 AM

Ok finally I got the enough courage with the suitable tools and opened the mirror cover -be careful this is dangerous and I was about to break it even it’s so easy to be broken- ……. Found lots of greasy dust but nothing loose!! There are 2 metal pins I took them out then in but still the problem is there….
Stop!!!!!!!
Don’t tell me I have to change the mirrors there must be a solution for that

if you want folding mirrors you have to buy the 2 new mirrors - then the door switch. i retrofitted this on my 01. wasn't that hard. I admit the mirrors were a challenge to get out. It's funny, i was more adventurous with my 01.. i'm taking this baby into the dealer and see if it's covered under my new extended warranty... which they said it would be.

u must be kidding me!!! i have to pay thousands to get folding options to work again!!!
just forget it if so!!!:dunno:

rastaFarai 05-09-2009 09:21 PM

Thatwas the for the person asking how do i get folding mirrors. So i was telling him what he'd need to do to retrofit.

You can do whatever you want to do or spend whatever you want to spend. I would suggest just finding a good independent, or going to dealer and tell them what to do. Tell them you dont want to pay for replacing the mirrors. Aren't you under warranty anyway though?

ashrafkh 05-10-2009 07:04 AM

if it was under warranty i wouldnt raise the issue on this forum :(
