If I remember right, it only has 2 wires to it... constant ground and power signal. the ground wouldn't cause that problem, sounds like a power issue. If you have any kind of multimeter, check the voltage on the positive wire to the light, if it has a constant, but low from the sound of it, voltage than you likely have a light module problem. It would be worth spending 5 minutes swapping modules with another similar X5 (same light options, ie: xenon vs halogen) to confirm prognosis. Gently pry the woodgrain trim out from above the light switch on the dash, exposing the only 2 screws holding it in. The light module should be plug-n-play for testing, but new one would need to be encoded to the vehicle by the dealer at permanent replacement.
But for testing purposes, you can look up the wiring schematic through the "online WDS" link at the top center of the page. That will show you the circuit for the lighting system.
