How do I replace my Oil Pressure Switch on my X5??
My oil light is flickering on my 2003 X5. Before I start thinking the worst and thinking it's my oil pump I want to see if possibly changing my oil pressure switch will do the trick. The car runs fines so I have a feeling it's the sensor. Can anyone give me detailed instructions with pics or possibly a youtube link as to how I can change my oil pressure switch. Please Help if you can. Thanks

Item #12 to replace the switch you need 19mm wrench and revome the air filter box to get to it.Following the diagram above you get an idea |
I need to resurrect this thread.
I need to replace my oil pressure switch and after taking the airbox out and getting some industrial strength work lights to help me see I am pretty sure my X5 does not match the diagram above. I have a 3.0i E53 X5. I took some pics and I can post them later today when i get back from work. But here's the thing: Where item 12 (oil pressure switch) is in place, there's no item 13 on my X5. So, this is what throws me off. Item 13, marked as the temperature sensor, seems to be pointing towards where the No 10 gasket ring is... Has anyone else taken pics of their oil pressure sensor? before I remove it I want to make sure I'm removing the correct one. Also, how do you actually unscrew it? It doesn't seem to have enough room to turn a wrench around. -- |
OK, here are a couple of pictures: as you can see, the sender unit in question does not look like the new one, and also there's only one instead of two: (oil pressure and water)
If you want to see the location of the oil pressure sensor, click on the link below, and then zoom in on the hot spots: Rapid VR - E53 Oil Pressure Switch http://www.rapidvr.com/images/04_DSC03600.JPG http://www.rapidvr.com/images/05_DSC03595.JPG http://www.rapidvr.com/images/DSC03613.JPG Anyone? I'm thinking there must be other people who changed their oil pressure switch.... :) |

He he great image editing technique and being clear about what you mean! :)
Well, kind of that's what I thought, my confusion is that it does not match the diagram. And I thought that these guys from BMW, being German and all, would not actually screw up in their documentation, would they? ;) btw, if that's the one, man, it's hard to get to.. you need small hands for that.... OK, I just need to follow up on this one:
I had made a weak attempt this weekend to get to it again, but it doesn't look like you can get to the oil pressure switch from the top. but being Easter weekend and all, I did not put the car up on ramps to look at it from below. So, has anyone else replaced the oil pressure switch? From the top, as you can see from the pics or the RVR zoom, I removed the air filter box, and then I can see the switch. I talked to the BMW (dealer) service manager and, without being specific, he said it will cost me 4-600 dollars if they do it as "there's a lot to remove" to get to the switch. I guess if nobody comes forth, I'll assume nobody's done it, so maybe when I get it done I'll try and follow up if anyone is interested for the future. |
