Trunk lid won't open
My wife just got back from Disneyland and the trunk release isn't working. Won't work from the button on the hatch or the key release. She had to load all of the luggage in through the back seat.
I also noticed that the door lock/unlock button isn't working from the console, although the key fob would unlock and lock the doors. She said this was working earlier. When I manually popped the trunk the power close feature isn't working either. I haven't looked for a blown fuse yet, but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas. The car did sit for 4 days and it still has the original battery. I know BMWs sometimes have weird electrical problems when the battery starts to go. Any Ideas? '04 E53 3.0 Thanks. -Jeff |
TSB Number Issue Date TSB Title 515303 APR 04 Campaign - Rear Hatch Latch Electrical Failure
Just found this. Anyone have more details? Quote:

You may want to check your license tag lights also to see if they are both on. I had occassional problems with both the lock and the plate lights and my dealer ended up replacing the whole assembly under warranty. Apparently water gets in the lock and light housing and rots everything out. My rear lock was locking and unlocking itself and my plate lamps kept going on and off resulting in trouble messages.
Good luck! |
it must be the actuator. either is damaged or the electrical connector is loose. she probably slammed the lid too hard. try to open it manually from inside! you have the instructions in the manual
|
Yeah no issue opening it manually.

So I fixed it. Not sure what I did though. I checked the fuse and it was fine. I could hear the relay clicking when the button is pushed, so I swapped it with another relay, but no luck. I swapped the relays back and it worked.
Very Odd. I would still like to get the details on the TSB/Recall that I posted above if anyone has that info. Thanks. Jeff |
Which relay did you try swapping out?

F60 usually blows when rear doors don't unlock and rear hatch will not open. Mine had similar issues. Eventually, it became a parasitic drain. A replacement GMIII fixed operation issues.
