Picked up an '04 4.8is today!
2 Attachment(s)
I have been looking for a good deal on a 4.8is and found this one with 27k miles on it. I really like this truck so far! It needs the usual mods though, like the SMG steering wheel with paddle shifters, exhaust and some rear wheel spacers. I also have an E39 M5 which is more of a weekend toy, so the X5 is my daily driver. The M5 is not much fun when you're stuck in traffic!
So does anyone have a recommendation on a mild exhaust setup that doesn't drone? |
Congrats .... Nice rides!!!
P.S. I would blur out the license plates in the pictures if i were you..... |
Congrats on the whip. Before you sink money into an exhaust, search on here and checkout some resonator deletes.....great mod for the money........Phil
|
Thanks for the info, Phil. I'll check into that!
|
WOW! 04 is lookin' Haawt!! Very Nice!!
Nice E39 also! I did a Supersprint exhaust - I do agree with 4.6is ryder........check into res delete, etc. etc. I deleted my res and went with an xpipe.....also I did the 30mm H&R spacers...giver her a nice stance! Let the mods begin!! RR:thumbup: |
beautiful....i love the ///M5 though
|
I spy a DInan badge on that ish too! Watcha got under that hood :D
|
Ha, yes the M5 is a blast to drive. It just has the Stage I chip and cat-back exhaust, and Stage I Dinan supsension.
I just looked under the X5 at the exhaust (it looks like it's never even been in the rain before!) and I see the center muffler and the two resonators at the back. Is the res delete just cutting those off and welding in a straight pipe to the tips? Where would the X-pipe go? After the center muffler? I'll do some searching and see if I can figure it out... Also, are these the right 30mm spacers? http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html...3&subcat_id=93 |

Nice ride! Almost exactly like the one I just picked up:) If you need an extended warranty/maintenance plan, I just bought one from Josh at Macon BMW...The price was EXCELLENT!

Their warranty seems to cover everything the BMW warranty does, plus some additional items. Speaking of warranties, I just found that the LF outer CV boot is torn and needs to be replaced. |

I bought my 02 4.4 from Carmax nearly 2 years ago and got their Maxcare warranty as well. It only cost me $1,800 and I have had over $6,500 in warranty work done. They have not turned down a single thing. Even the part on the seat that extends under your thigh. It broke and they replaced it for over $200 without batting an eye. I actually can't believe that they are still offering warranties on X5's after how much money I have cost them. You think just like me. I bought the warranty with the intention of only going to BMW dealers and that is what I have done. It has been great! Good luck. |

Call me crazy though.... Less than 36 hours since I brought it home and I noticed the LF CV boot is ripped and grease is everywhere. :( I thought about taking it to the dealer to get it fixed under warranty (a minor hassle, and it would probably take several days), but decided to fix it myself so I could drive it this weekend.... $20 worth of parts and 4 hours later, and it's as good as new again! |

Here is my laundry list of items I have had replaced at a BMW dealership without question; valve cover gaskets, fuel pump, water pump, valley pan gasket, alternator, final stage resistor, above mentioned seat issue, coolant expansion tank, and a misc. heating and coolling issue. It looks like you still have the Carmax sticker on the back. I got them to take that off as soon as I bought it. Looks much cleaner, IMO. Oh, I also suggest doing an oil change. I know for a fact that they did not use a BMW filter or the long life BMW oil on mine. Instead they just use a good synthetic and expect you to do it every 7,500, which is probably fine, but if you are going off of the service light indicator of the car for oil changes intervals then you will be way over the oil's limit. I also changed the coolant and brake fluid because I am anal. |
Thanks for the tips. I'll will definitely change the oil and do some basic maintenance to make sure it's all up to BMW standards.
Btw, where do recommend buying brake pads from? Are the Axxis pads the way to go? They've apparently put new rear pads and rotors on, but I can't tell what brand they are. The front rotors look new too, but the front pads are just about gone. |
I bought the rotors from this place, which is used big time by people on this forum.
http://www.zeckhausen.com/ and bought the pads from this place, which I have used for years when purchasing parts for my 325i. For some reason Zeckhausen does not stock the XBG's. http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html/index.asp The centric rotos are nice becuase they are high quality and come with a black coated hub that wont ever rust. Axxis Delux (low dust) pads and Centric rotors are popular here, but I went with Axxis XBG's, which are a little more aggressive. If you want even more bite you can go with the Axxis Ultimates. The XBG's seemed like the best combination of the two. Edit: I keep forgetting that you have a 4.8is. From what I remember brake options are more limited for your model. I am not sure why, but I don't think you have as many aftermarket options as far as brakes go. I could be wrong. Other 4.8is owners may be able to help more. |
I just have to say I am LOVING this car!
Quick update... Installed the X-pipe (2.5") a few days ago and can't help but to goose it every time I leave a stop light. Sounds like a real hot rod. :D Also installed the M3/SMG wheel with the paddle shifters. What a huge improvement in looks and feel! Feels like I'm driving a brand new car now, and shifting with the paddles is pretty cool. Too bad the steptronic isn't just a little faster with the shifts though. Added the 30mm spacers on the rear.... Now the front wheels look like they need maybe a 10mm spacer installed to compliment the rear. Maybe adding the front flares would help too. Finally, I removed the roof rails, rear wiper and headlight washers to clean up the looks a little bit. Still looking for something to fill the holes in the front bumper where the HL washers were, but I think it looks much better without them, and I would never need to use them where I live anyway. Car still needs to be detailed, clayed and waxed. Also need to figure out what to do with the A,B, and C pillars between the windows. The glossy black finish is impossible to clean the water stained marks out of them. Pics coming soon! |

Could you post a pic with the 20" stggerred along with the 30mm spacers. i am using H&R 30mm spacers now for my 22's.....The 22's are going bye bye and i am waiting on my Vredestein tires to wrap around my new style 215 rep staggered 20's...I was going to get rid of the 30mm spacers because I thought it may be a lil too much..i would liketo see how that looks.. THX, RR:thumbup: |
I'll get some pics today if I can. The rear wheels are flush with the flares at the top now, but I'm still getting used to the overall look of the wide stance. I think it needs some small mud flaps or something now to cover the tire below the flares a little more as there is a lot of tire tread showing around the lower part of the wheel well.
And like I said, the front wheels look like they need to be pushed out a little more now to match the rears. I think if you're only doing the rear spacers, the 25mm might be a better overall look. |
Sweet rides I love the color of your M5!
