Bluetooth again....need thoughts ASAP
 

Guys, I need your help

I thought I would finally be all set with getting the Bluetooth and Assist to work but alas.... here goes.

My X5 is a 3-1-04 build with NAV and Assist. I've done the following in the order shown, per the SIB 841304 to get Bluetooth and Assist functional.
Can someone please point me in the right direction with what might be wrong, I need all the info I can garner to go back to the dealer who coded the car for the new TCU. They sadly are lost on this stuff, supposedly, the TCU was set to BT "on" as well as Assist "on". I have copies of Bmwmotorsports, SIB841304 Blutooth Diagnostics.pdf and will bring to the dealer, I'm stuck without their computer.

First, I put in the -114 TCU, and had the car coded by the dealer (3 hours to do this but they only chared me for half the time)

2nd, I tried to pair the Motorola E815 but no go, I asked X5 World and discovered that I needed to add a BT antenna and cable (Crevier had said all I needed was the TCU) :dunno: Did not having the antenna installed on the code day screw something up?? The dealer who coded didn't think I needed the BT antenna also??

3rd, Bought and added the BMW Bluetooth antenna (BMW 84 50 6928461-01, Hirshman part number 920 800 002) and antenna cable.

4th, Tried to pair the phone again (plus several others at Verizon) but no go

The VR on the -114 TCU works, the TCU will call Verizon and gets James Earl Jones voice, however the Assist will not dial out, i currently have not activated assist with BMW as I'm trying to sort out the phone. I have the black bumper antenna and the BT antenna connected to the TCU along with the main cable. there are no other Fakra cable connected to the TCU other than these

Is there anything I'm doing wrong in the pairing process, when i hit the R/T button, i get a solid ACTIVATE PHONE in the cluster display but the E815 cannot discover the car......tried pairing next to antenna etc, N/g.

I appreciate all your help and will post what it took to get this accomplished when done for an update..........thanks

1. Switch the car off
2. Hold down the pairing button in the arm rest console. NOT the steering wheel or the R/T button!
3. The display should read "Bluetooth pairing..."
4. Make sure bluetooth is activated on your cell phone and search for devices.
5. YOur cell phone should discover the BMW BT module and ask for a code
6. Enter the 4 digit code on your BT card or on the module itself.
7. YOur phone should now be paired...

The pairing procedure on the Motorola BT module is not the same as the Visteon module, and there is no pairing button in the arm rest for this configuration :tsk:

Thanks, #1 the car has the Motorola TCU so there is no pairing button, just the steering wheel buttons. King, your suggestion is appreciated but its not applicable to my X.

UCrewX5, Regarding the Motorola pairing procedure, i tried the procedure per your link shown and the procedure in SIB 841304 (essentilly the same). The Bluetooth phone does NOT discover the car period....you never get to enter the pass key. As stated, I tried several phones......

My guess is that its some sort of a coding issue, I'm printing everything I can find to bring with me to the dealer tomorrow.

If anyones had a smilar case of NON-Pairing that was resolved via dealer coding, let me know what your dealer tried.......

As a side note, it's unfortunate that BMW doesnt put together a manual or some sort of a full "how to" book for the dealers to use (or insure what they send gets to the floor). The cars are advancing but the personnel don't seem to get the training on how to apply the tecnology.
This trip to the dealer will be the third time for BT that I've had to bring in printed SIB's and web instructions to them to point them in the right direction. You know they've never seen the materials when the tech grabs the service advisors, shop forman and service manager and they all start reading and trying the stuff i give them. The tech that did my car grew up with BMW and used to work on my Tii and Bavaria, long before computers, he is there head guy and this is one of the largest dealers in RI.

At long last the conversion of my 3-2-04 build X5 to Bluetooth and Assist is working. I have my Mororola E815 paired to the car, full address book tranfer and VR from the -114 TCU is working.....life is good. :thumbup:

To achieve this miracle, it took yet another 3-1/2hours in the dealer. We had everyone in service and parts involved but the janitor.....without bashing the dealer, it was scary to think that I was conducting a mini-service training on how to do this......seriously.

Despite they're having all the BMW TSB's etc, etc, they did not want to beleive that you could have a pre 05 car with BT and Assist. It took 2 1/2 hrs to present every article from the X5 world archives to convince them it would work (thanks for the articles), and then an additional hour to re-recode.

Despite their reservations, they agreed to recode the vehicle to satisfy me. Magically, on this second recode, the system came alive. I firmly belieive they didn't do the proper coding the first time because they simply beleived it couldnt be done.

In reality, the dealer actually had the best TSB I've seen yet (didnt get to copy the number), an update (of sorts, from July august or september 05) of SIB 841304 that we've seen, it was a basic "how to" manual and it was a great paper. If they had simply followed this the first time, it would have been a 1/2 hr job.

At any rate, its working...

For anyone else looking to update their 3-04 or later, X5 from Nav and Assist to BT, NAV and Assist with Voice Recognition for the phone, you need the following:

Motorola 84-10-6-964-114 (or newest -056) TCU........Call Crevier for $$
Bluetooth Antenna $19.50
Antenna connector cable $21.50

Contact Randy at European Integrated Systems www.eiskits.com for the antenna and cable. If youve got ASSIST, you've got the Mic and don't need to spend $164.00 or so for the BT install kit, all you need is the antenna and cable. Check out the EIS site, it's worthwhile...

Can you remember how they coded it? the options on the bmw DIS?
I have the same TCU and when bmw coded the tcu the bluetooth function diasppeared......?

The dealer handled the coding via their computer, unfortunately, I have no knowledge of how the BMW computer system operates.
