Misfire Codes & Rough Idle

Decided to start a new thread since the other had gone way too long.

I've got the following codes:
P0313
P0300
P1353
P1351
P0171
P0313p
P0300P

I have a very rough idle, but only when I let it idle for an extended period of time (ie at a traffic light). If I never let it idle normal, say at ever traffic light I put it in Neutral and rev RPMs to 1000...it will never start to idle rough. And if I turn it off while it idle rough, then turn it back on, the rough idle goes away until I let it sit for a while again.

I've already put new spark plugs, checked for vacuum leaks on hoses, cleaned out DISA vavle, cleaned out Idle Ctrl Valve, and swapped coils cleared the codes and the codes came back with a misfire on the same cylinders.

If I put a bottle of Lucas Fuel Injector Cleaner it runs better and I can actually sit at a traffic light without the rough idle. It takes a lot longer to start the rough idle.

Anyone have any ideas....bad injector or bad O2 sensor maybe?:dunno:

Did you solely do a visual check on your vacuum hoses, or did you (or shop) have a smoke-test done?
Sometimes vacuum leaks are not visible to the naked eye.

A loose vacuum hose wouldn't cause idle and misfires only some of the time.

What are the definitions for these codes?

culthero 09-05-2008 06:18 PM

P0300-Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0313-Misfire Detected Low Fuel Level
P1351-Misfire Cylinder 5 With Fuel Cut-off
P1353-Misfire Cylinder 6 With Fuel Cut-off
P0171-Fuel Trim, Bank 1 System too Lean

Any Ideas? My next step is to swap fuel injectors, clear codes, and see if it moves or stays the same...but if someone can give me some more insight I would greatly appreciate it.

I could be way off base...but could it be the VANOS? Sorry i'm not more help to ya.

Are you talking about the DISA valve? I inspected and cleaned that already and its still got the same problem.

So after doing everything I did. I finally got my X5 running well. It took 3 tanks half full with a full bottle of Lucas Fuel Injector Cleaner...one long out of town trip (150 miles each way)...and wallah! Rough Idle is gone!

Go figure! :dunno:

I had the misfire problem before. It turned out to be the coil and breather valve problem. After replacing the coil, everything is fine.
