loud glass clanking sound when closing door

When I close my driver side door with the window down, I hear a loud glass clanking sound. When I close the door with the window up, no problems.

Perhaps one of the plastic clips is broken? Or failing window regulator? Anything I can do to fix this or should I just leave it alone? Thx.

actually, I even hear this glass clanking sound when im driving and my window is 1/4 open from the top. I told my SA that when I first got my CPO and he replaced it and said it was the regulator but then right after that happened my passenger side started doing it too. So I went back to the dealer and saw another SA but then this SA wasn't as accomodating and said you can't be so anal about every little thing you hear. He said maybe i'm just paranoid or something. So I never went back to that dealer again.

Sure would like to know what is causing this though...

The rear most plastic clip is the one that fails first (for the front windows). It is easy to tell if it has broken, with the window 1/2 way down pull up at the back of the glass. If it doesn't move, the regulator is fine. If it moves up about an inch or two... then its broken. That is simply the quickest way to tell. :D

I searched the forum and looks like you need to purchase the entire regulator kit to get the plastic clips. Is this correct. Also, the process seems fairly involved. Thoughts?

I have an 04' CPO'd X5 w/ 53K that has the same door/window/clanking problems. It makes the car sound like a POS when you close the door. I thought it was normal, but it sounds like it might be plastic clips.

I'll do the test that weasel56 describes when I get home and see.

If it's a broken clip, I'm taking it in to get fixed. I hate that sound.

Other than that, I love my X5 so far.

I have this same issue - will test it tonight.

Not that it matters much but for this very same reason..I never shut my doors unless the windows are all the way up. If I have to shut the door with the window down at any length I very very gently shut the door. I almost guide it closed...Its seemed to have worked I haven't had to replace a regulator in the last year and a half...

That's an excellent tip. Now if I can just remember to do that. LoL.

I had the same clanking sound on the driver's door when I raised and lowered the window and when I shut the door. It ended up being loose bolts on the regulator.
