Paint peeling off

I searched and couldn't find anything on this. Has anyone else noticed paint fading or peeling off in places like the door jams, the edges of the hood, or basically any area that is not exposed. The car is an 03 x5. Im trying to figure if it is just from the salt on the roads in the winter, or just bad paint.

Mine was like that too. First time I've seen something like this on a BMW and I have owned more than 10. I think they are all like that.

Around the hood edges I could not stand it, so I taped up and hit all the edges with paint.

FSETH 09-05-2008 07:27 PM

I have noticed a spot or two on the edges of my hood as well. I thought something must have hit/scratched it.

It sounds to me like maybe there is some previous paintwork to the vehicle. Aftermarket paint jobs if not done proper can peel off. Check to see if you have tape lines around the edges. You can sometimes see them on paint jobs that are not sanded down properly.

No...in the door jams or similar crevices, it is actually a known defect. Alot of X's from 00 - 03 are like that, including mine...Its been discussed before...it came like that from the factory. the paint was weak or not enough in those areas or however you wanna call it..thats what it is..

X5Flyboy 09-06-2008 09:07 AM

have not noticed anything like that on my 2001, but will keep an eye out for it. Thanks for the heads-up

My 2002 X5 had paint peel on the edge of the hood. I believe it may be covered if your still under factory warranty. I tried to have a dealer look at it, and he told me it had been repainted. Which it had not been. Anyways, I had it repainted by a bodyshop.

chefwong 09-06-2008 11:31 AM

Yes, it's a known bug. I had mine dealt with on my '03 as well. It's very thin to nil paint on the edges of panels. Moreso even on the underside of the hood, and more clearly seen on the gaps/edges on the fender panels.

This was escalated to the regional rep who *knew* about it but just had to make a *official visit* to the dealership to look and approve of it.

A whole repaint is not needed since the areas on mine where not exposed. All the areas on mine were dealt with with a bodyshop I was very well familiar with.

If you are in warranty, which I doubt....I would take it up with the dealership. However, just be comfortable with their subbed bodyshop and if they will match YOUR LEVEL of expectations on quality

Never saw that on original BMW "STANDOX" paint job, onlu litle road rocks hits but peeling by it self never. Are you sure it is original paint job and not ex crash car? Bugs are always possible too....

FSETH 09-06-2008 07:30 PM

I looked my X over again and noticed 2 more small areas where the paint is doing this. They are the edges of the side panels at the top-rear of the X near where the roof spoiler (3rd brake light plastic area) meets up with the metal side panels on top. It is identical on both sides.

Sorry, I really didn't know how to better describe this area.

daveg520 09-07-2008 12:19 AM

I had my friend who owns an autobody shop look at the whole car and he said that its never been in any accidents that he could see...But i'm not going to take it back to the dealership, I just returned a car there under the lemon law so the are probably still a little bitter about that mishap. Im planning on getting the 4.6 body kit so when that gets put on I'll have my friend touch up the spots where the paint it peeling.

I just wanted to see if this was a known problem or just my x. Thanks for all the replies as well!

Hey Dave520,

I have a 2002 X5 and i experienced the paint peeling off the door jambs, hood and hatch jamb. I had the extended warranty up until march of this year. It took a lot of persuasion but I got the dealer to fix that. They painted the hood and jambs but not the hatch. i guess I have to go back.

I noticed the paint was peeling on the sides when the hood was open. Will this continue to peel all the way to the fender?? How much will a detail for this cost?? Thanks

I think someone mentioned that ALL X5s (at least E53s), regardless of market, are built in the Spartanburg, SC plant.

I noticed a small section near the left fog light, the clear coat was peeling off. Attachment 31461

I took the X to the dealer and they told me that they would need to get an OK by the Regional BMW rep to do the work. Apparently, any type of paint work that is to be covered under warranty needs to be approved by BMW.

Well, today (while the rep was in town) I took it in so this guy could see it and he approved the work. Now, I'll be getting the entire front bumper painted to look like new. I'm very pleased because it also had plenty of small stone chips on it. Very impressed with the BMW warranty thus far!! :D

FSETH 06-19-2009 01:09 AM

Has anyone touched up the paint themselves in any of these areas? Especially the hood and fender edges? It seems like such a small thing to take the X to a body shop for. Especially in an area that isn't all that visible.

I posted this same subject some time ago with not much interest/response as I was concerned with the appearance of the edges of my bonnet (hood) and rear upper hatch door sides. Strange how such a nice vehicle can come up so short in very obvious locations. Shits me every time I open the bonnet and look at the inferior finish on the sides of the bonnet. Definately has not been in a crash. I aim to repaint the whole bonnet sometime soon including the edges. Didn't think I was the only one with this issue.

FSETH 06-19-2009 09:41 AM

^^Yours is way more advanced than mine, but it is the same situation.

jst2878 06-19-2009 09:45 AM

best bet is to get touch up paint from the dealership and cover up the fading areas. I did mine and you cant tell where the scuffs where

Does the dealer touch-up paint come with a brush applicator? Is it an actual brush or foam?

Also, I am wondering if keeping a coat of wax on the prone areas will keep it from fading as fast?

jst2878 06-19-2009 10:06 AM

the dealer touch up paint is a brush application. use that and all will be good. you can wax it but it still looks bad.

Thanks. I am going to give it a try. I have Oxford Green, so with my luck the dealer wont have it in stock and will probably have to order it. Maybe I will luck out.

As far as the waxing, I meant touch up then wax the known problem areas along the side of the hood and fenders. Maybe the wax will help prevent future fading. :dunno:

chefwong 06-19-2009 10:34 AM

This is a KNOWN issue coming out of the plant. Ours was resprayed under warranty. It's on the underside/side where the panels edges are. It it more relevent under the hood, on the side closer to the windshield as well.

Yeah, my X is an 02 and out of warranty.

FSETH 04-02-2010 12:11 PM

Does anyone know how long BMW warrantied the paint on our cars?

I have my car in a reputable shop getting some work from a parking lot hit and run. I asked them if they could hit the areas that were fading and they told me to contact BMW because they thought there was a recall or something else where BMW was taking care of this for some people. I told the shop that I bought our X used and am out of any warranty. They still suggested calling and asking them about it. By the way, this shop is the preffered collision center for the largest BMW dealer in Atlanta, so I would think they know what they are talking about to some degree.

chefwong, BMW resprayed your edges, is that correct?

DONONE69 04-02-2010 12:28 PM

i noticed this on mine a while back in the bonnet and inside of one door, well annoying!

You know, it's funny because my car is doing the same thing, and I spotted this thread. Going to BMW on Monday or Tuesday armed with this info and see if they'll fix it.
