And, X5 front brake pad sensor replacement DIY

Anyone know how difficult or have a diagram of how to replace the front brake pad sensors? And estimated time?

30min. including jacking up the car and lower it.

Just curious why are you replacing the sensor without doing the brakes? Did it go bad?

Well my front brake pad sensor was never actually replaced and so I have to do it now. I had my brakes changed about 3 hours ago and dont feel like going back to the shop

Look on the X5 World home page for the DIY articles on brake pad replacement. The two articles by Hayaku and Mickey have pictures that show the sensors. Front left, and right rear only. You can get to the sensors easily after the wheels are off. Ensure that the connections are tight in the junction boxes where they connect to the vehicle.

If the sensors were worn through and the brake pad warning light came on, you need new sensors. If the warning light never came on but is on now, the shop may not have reconnected the sensors. Even in that case, it is a good idea to replace them as they go brittle over time.

Brake pad sensor

Just replaced the pads front and rear on my 2001. The sensors are held in the inner pad by a spring clip, and very easily removed, after removing the left front tire and wheel. Turn the steering wheel hard right to provide easier access. Using a small screwdriver reach to the center of the pad, and pry out the sensor, carefully so you don't lose the spring clip. The wires are connected with a plug assembly at the frame. To reinstall, put the spring clip in first, then push in the new sensor, making sure it seats properly in the spring clip. Use a light to check before reinstalling the tire and wheel. Repeat process on right rear.

I've done this many times on my other BMW's and friends BMW's. Piece of cake, so I did it on my wife's X5, once again, piece of cake, but the light is still on for the linings with a new sensor. I never had to reset anything before. Shouldn't the light go out on its own?

I'm planning on checking the connection, but I hope I'm not missing anything.

to reset the light put the key to position 2 so the dash lights come on but dont start it and leave it sit for 45 seconds and light should reset itself

Pad Sensor

My light just came on and I need to change the pads but the rotors are fine...no ridge since I replaced them a few months ago but didn't put new pads in. My question is will the sensor damage the rotor if I keep driving the car until the pads arrive next week in the mail?

Thanks,

Gary

No, the sensor will not damage the rotor. Always replace the pad when you do the rotors, the old pads are formed to the old rotors. You can loose much braking ability by using old pads with new rotors, as well as damage the new rotors.
