Should I do the 60K service at dealer for $880
Does this have to be at the dealer, or can I simply get the list check the items that it says check and replace the parts at my favorite mechanic shop. In other words, is the dealer's service worth almost nine hundred bucks?
thx, |
Are you handy with a wrench?

I have done some under the shade mechanical work but not on a BMW.

change you oil ($50), oil filter ($10), air filter ($30), cabin air filter ($40), fill up window washing fluid ($10), steering wheel fluid ($10), brake fluid ($10), coolant ($10) lubricate the doors and all other moving hinges ($10). Now onto the "checks" and "inspects", check your brake pads (2 mins), rotors (2 mins), check CV boots (2 mins), check hoses (30 mins), check tires tread depth (2mins). read the DIY for reset service interval on the homepage (3 mins) and do a reset (3 mins).

Even if you don't want to do it yourself, take it to an indy shop before you pay the stealer that much. You will probably only pay 50% of what the dealer will charge.

The checklist for what's inspected is also on the home page.

That quote is on par with what other dealerships in my area wanted for Inspection II in my X3.
I went to an indy shop, got it done for about $230-ish among other things. I did buy/replace the engine and cabin air filter myself though, so they deducted that from the price. |
Thanks! I will shop around...
Thanks to all who responded. I will shop around. BTW, I am at the dealer today. How come the 1 series (i.e. 135 i) is more expensive than the 3 series, 47K versus 41K?

is it a 335?
|
Prices typically overlap. The top 1 series is more expensive than a base 3 series, the top 3 is more expensive than a base 5 and so on. The converts are typically the most expensive, save the M-cars. $47k for a 135i is high. Is it a convert?

Back to the original question, be sure you are changing the brake fluid every two years. It is worth doing. You aren't just checking the level, you are flushing it at each wheel, and making sure that you don't get air in the ABS actuation valves. Plan on getting a shop to do it for you. You may need to flush the coolant, and while that is simpler than the brake fluid it may also be worth just getting a shop to do it.

Yes, it's a 335i ;-)
