rpm lights

Hi,

Dont know if this is normal or not but when I first start my 2002 X5 4.6L the rpm lights are on, (orange/red,from 4000-8000 rpm) than as I drive they start to turn off one at a time until there is only two lights left on, (1 orange/1 red from 6500-8000 rpm), than when I shut the truck off for a while they all come back on and it starts all over again. If anyone can help i would really like to know what it is.

Thank You.

yeah it's normal, they tell you how high you can "safely" rev the motor before it is totally warmed up, the high-performance audis do this too only theirs are digital. Most BMW M cars have this or something like it (in the new ones there is a dial that moves around the tach instead of lights)

Yea I agree with mrkbbd. I like those lights alot. I wish I had a 4.6 or a 4.8is with those lights. I first found this out in a e39 m5.

yep, completely normal. my 4.8is has this as well, and mrkbbd hit the purpose on the head perfectly. its a cool feature for sure.

I find the lights are a lot less intrusive than the "cold mode" they used to employ keeping the transmission in sport mode until the car warmed up. My E39 used to stay in first and 2nd gears long passed when they should shift to warm the engine up faster. It was annoying.
