steering wheel clunking noise

Hi, got a 2004 e53 3.0d x5,and recently noticed whilst stationery and slightly moving the steering wheel left or right and allowing it to go back to its original position(not enough to turn wheels) I hear a dull clunking noise. Doesn't seem to be noisy whilst turning and moving in the car, any ideas?are the bushes in the steering column rack and issue?or bearings?thanks
