Water came through bumper. $ down the drain.

A couple weeks ago I went through an automated car wash at a gas station. All seemed fine when drove out, then my aftermarket subwoofer started thumping and bumping when i shouldnt. I jumped out and ran to the back of the car to find that water had made its way into the back left compartment drenching my aftermarket amplifier, bluetooth module, and whatever is beneath that. I jumped back in the car to drive home pissed that i just lost an amp due to a car wash, then i smelled smoke and heard fizzing. I looked in my rear view and smoke was rising out of the compartment. I pull off the road, run to the back, and see a 3 inch flame comming out of my amplifier. I thought i was going to sit there and watch my X burn but I luckily had a bottle of water to put out the flames.
My X (under warranty) gets towed 2 hours to Savannah from Statesboro GA because i wanted to be sure no other electronics were damaged from the water. The dealership discovers that water had leaked through the crash protection system of the bumper but they want 800$ to fix it becuase there is an aftermarket trailer hitch that they claim caused the problem. However, the hitch was sold to me on the car when i bought it, and the car was certified. Now, because of the hitch, the car (they cleaim) is not certified, and they want 800$. And of course they wont touch anything with the stereo and wont pay me 400$ for my fried amp even though it was caused by their water leak. So a month later i stand with a 800$ bumper bill, and 600$ in a new subwoofer/amp system. The 800$ I believe will be taken care of but this was definetly a major pain in the butt for just going to get my X clean.

The major issue is they sold me a certified pre-owned bmw with the aftermarket trailer hitch, and now because of the hitch, the bumped is not certified. Doesnt make any sense, so thats why im sure that will be worked out. Thanks for listening to me b ch. :bustingup

Sorry to hear your troubles. Yeah, that definitely sux when THEY are the ones responsible to make sure it's certified properly AND then they screw-up other stuff along with the car!

I'd get BMW NA involved if they don't want to pay for the amp/sub damage. What good is the certification if the dealer and/or BMW doesn't honor it?! :(

These kinda things are sure aggravating.

Well good luck on getting things all taken care of - all on their dime. Cya!

I know I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but, maybe I missed something......your bumper is an external component of the vehicle and should have nothing to do with "weather sealing" around the back of the vehicle. The drop gate and hatch are the two that make up the seal to keep elements outside our vehicles and if your rubber seals are bad then I can see you having leaks.

If so, why are they saying the bumper is the cause of the water leak?

It's nice to see BMWNA is responsive and open to help address this and other issues that may arise.
