Steering wheel peeling
The black coating on the inner portion of my '04 X5 4.8is steering wheel is peeling off and exposing the white underneath. It's a real eyesore. Anyone have this problem? What's the best fix? I don't want to buy a whole new wheel, but really don't like the look of the peeling. Thanks. :dunno:

mine is peeling too. it's should not happen. not sure what to do?
|
You can probably remove the wheel and all the trim, tape if off and paint the area that is peeling.
Honestly though, installing a new M3 SMG wheel and airbag is probably the single best upgrades I have done to my 4.8is. It wasn't cheap, but it feels like a brand new car. The stock 4.8 wheel is just downright ugly IMO compared to the M3 wheel. |
Known problem....take it to the dealer and they will replace it
|
the dealer will replace it for free?
|
Chris, do you have any pics of your wheel or a link where I can check it out?
As far as the dealer replacing it, my car is still under CPO warranty but I suspect that the CPO will NOT cover this issue because it's very skimpy on any coverage beyond core engine issues. I'd love to be wrong... |
My wheel is peeling as well. I'm just about to pick up a wheelskin to see if that'll fix/cover the issue.
|
It's covered under factory warranty for sure.....maybe under CPO (I had mine replaced while CPO'd) but in most cases because it's such a common problem with the X's the dealer will just replace it and pass the costs back to the manufacturer

when you guys say peeling you don't mean the stitching is coming apart?
|
yup same here and i only have 7k miles !!

Here's some pics of my wheel. Disregard the wiring mess... I'm installing some electronic goodies. :D

1st - if you are under warranty, by all meansm get the dealer to replace it
Myself, I just replaced my '01 original sport wheel with an M5 sport wheel per the DIY instructions here on this website - it's actually smaller dia than the one I took off and feels great - (pics in lounge, on the road again) |

Braman Palm beach BMW refused to replace mine. the service manger said it was a wear and tear issue. What a joke...
|
I had one of the WORST service experiences of my life there, complete nightmare. I'll never ever ever go back!
Went to Lauderdale Imports for the last warranty visit in October to correct Braman's mistakes. The wheel trim was only slightly peeling in the lower corner... was barely noticeable but they replaced it no questions asked. The good news is the trim is <$30 so it's still a cheap fix if you're already out of warranty. When this one begins to peel though, I'm going to have it coated by this guy to match the rest of the wood trim: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1092507 (scroll to post 10 for sample pic) |
The dealer replaced mine too. He said it was due to wear/rubbing but he had to list it down as peeling or it wouldn't be covered. Smart guy and has been a very good SM for me so far.

I have the same issue on my 2005 X5. I was told the warranty would cover this. The dealer has to order the part.
