I have had many cars and many snow tires but once I went Nokian that is all I will use. This will be my 4th set. If you see a lot of snow they are well worth it and are the same price as the Blizzaks.
If you hardly see snow you may want to go with a cheeper brand.
The Dunlop is nice and about $50 less per tire. The Pirelli is cheeper but I do not know how good they are.

thx. Just ordered a set of 255/55R18s. Managed to get them for $297CAD each including install/balance/valve/tire levy. Now I'm ready for the SNOW!

If I'm understanding the picture correctly these tires are studded. Do you know what kind of road noise to expect? Are they good looking tires or are the really beefy?

You can get them with or without studs. Make sure you order them with that in mind. Nokian studs are out of this world and no one else does them like they do! Do not let the tire folks tell you they can put studs in them after they arrive. They can but not the same quality as Nokian. I ordered mine without studs. Yes much less road noise and better dry braking. If I lived in snow for 3-6 months straight I would get studs (I have had them before). For me I drive to the Mt. to ski every other weekend and spend about 2-4 weeks in it up there so I prefer non-studs. The new 2005 tread design is a work of art (the picture on the left on there web site) the older ones are beefer looking. They were going to sell me the older ones but I told them I only wanted the new tread design

Hope this helps.

Kal Tire. I phoned 8 different Kal tires and their price varied dramatically. finally found one that for 1271CAD total, including all taxes, I get 4 tires, installed, balanced, stems etc.

 Strange. I thought pricing would be consistent across the chain. I'll make a note to check prices at all the Kal Tire outlets instead of just one. BTW, I thought studded tires weren't allowed in Alberta?

I'll probably be in the market for a set of winters for the X5 next year. Let us know how the Nokians work out for you in our crazy Alberta winters.

I checked the website and they are allowed, however, I don't really want studded tires. I'll have to call to make sure they have no studs.
