Weird Issue at Startup
 

So every once in a while I have this weird issue with my 2002 X5. Nothing major, but I want to get to the bottom of it. It happened again for the first time in a long time today. Basically I was walking to my X. I hit the unlock button and the car unlocked normally. I get in the car, and start up the engine, and the hazard lights turn on. So I turn them off and begin to drive, and I push the Door lock button, but it doesn't work. I get home, I shut off the car, get out, and then hit the lock buttom from my key. The system arms, but the doors are unlocked! Then I just unlock it again and lock and it seems to be fine. This issue happens exactly the same way every once in awhile.

Does this mean anything? Any idea what causes this?

Possibly a problem with the general module. It controls the door locks and alarm functions. I believe someone on this site just had it replaced and would remember the price. But also if I remember right the dealer forgot to note and reset the car/cey memory options before hand so they were lost. So remind them of this if you have it replaced in the future...

But it could be something else as well like an individual component throwing off the system, so it is always a good idea to have the dealer do a proper diagnosis as they have the best diagnosis equipment to help diagnose these problems.

Generally, weird electrical stuff happening is a sign of a weak battery. Check your battery and or Alternator.

Michelle, the hazards do turn off with no problem. They just start up by themselves when I start the engine. The door lock button is the only thing that doesn't work. I checked out those two links, and like my problem, they both go away after the car is 'restarted'. I don't know.. maybe its a computer issue.

weasel56, thanks for your input, but i hope your wrong lol! I think i know the post your talking about, i think he paid $600 to get that module replaced. I still need to replace a control arm!! ($400 to do that) i really hope its not the general module...

big j, I've been uneasy about my battery for some time now. The dealer tells me there is nothing wrong with it though, and they supposedly tested it recently when they did Inspection I or whatever. But I believe the same battery has been in there since 2002. Maybe i should swap it anyway?

If it's the original, then yes. Probably worth a try and if it doesn't help then you know it's not the battery. Check with autozone for a battery, they may have one that will work. They carry ones for my e46 and works just fine over the $200 OEM battery.

The only thing with the aftermarket batteries vs the OEM is that the OEM has a sealed top and vents through a hose to outside the car... eliminating corrosion on the battery terminals (keep in mind there is an important fuse panel right above the battery as well) while the aftermarkets have regular venting that may cause problems. And the aftermarket batteries usually end up getting replaced in less than 1/2 the time the OEM lasts as they do not have the same AH rating that is needed to run the vehicles electronics. The only aftermarket batteries I like are the fully sealed spiral cell AGM (glass mat) batteries such as the optomas and other like it. Just pay attention to the cranking amps and the AH rating.

Yeah if I were to replace my battery it would definately be OEM. thanks for the tip. but i dont know, i drove the car a few more times today and its fine. like i said, the issue arises randomly. i will leave it for now. I was just curious to know if it meant anything or was a symptom to a larger issue.
