I had Safelite replace my windshield with a factory piece. I cannot remember if it is Sekurit or which of the other two suppliers but it is the exact PN same as OEM. I saved over $600 from dealer and it is warranted for life.

Safelite just got back to me with a quote for OEM glass at $942:wow:
That is a $600 premium over the Safelite glass. I do not have comprehensive or glass coverage on my policy, so my deductible for this would be $500. Who knows if they would pick up an additional $500 for the OEM glass?

I am even more happy with my decision on the repair after hearing how much it could have cost. Got to say, if I had to pay out of pocket, I would most likely go with the Safelite glass. If it looked wavy, I would probably be able to have it replaced with the OEM stuff under their warranty, but for 3 times the price it would be worth trying, IMO.

Well, I got another rock chip less than two weeks after getting the crack repaired. I would have lost my sh!t if I would have paid to repalce the glass.

Safelite replaced me about 2-3 years back with OEM Comfort Glass. Kicker was the Comfort glass was CHEAPER than their glass costs ...so no OOP . Go figure..

The windshield on our '01, has a couple of scratches, pits, a couple small stars, etc.
Std after 76k and 8 1/2 years, I suppose. It still gets by NC inspection, as none of
the "artifacts" are serious...

My prob is that in NC, (where the car is reg'd & insured), insurance won't pay a dime,
before my standard/comprehensive deductible, unless the windshield was "damaged due to accident".
I guess I will just keep staring through the orig I have. :(

QwkAg, I had to dig through my recently received car/m'cycle/umbrella policies bill(s), for the answer: Aha, we inadvertently went for a $500
deductible on ACV, (comprehensive), on all 3 cars, way back when.

Probably should have rolled the dice with a lower/no deduct. on that item. Thus, the windshield fix, for the CR-V, is again on our dime.

OE vs. OEM replacement. OEM is made to manufactures specs. OE is the manufactures windshields (BMW Stamp)

I live in MA. (most of the year) and there is no deductable for comprehensive coverage on glass. If you have comprehensive, they must replace it free of charge. How do you convince the insurance co. that you only want an OE Windshield, not some knock-off from a glass shop they steer you to?

You are 100% correct regarding the OE / OEM point. It drives me crazy that 99% of people use the two interchangeably.

You have to be careful about the replacement being "free." Just because there is no deductible does not mean it's free. They will reimburse for the cost of the parts and usually a standard amount of the labor based on their labor rate info, which is generally completely out to lunch with the real world.

Is our rearview mirror fastened by a plate embedded in the windshield?

A while back the rear view on the 540 came off the bracket, and the whole windshield had to be replaced to put the mirror back on. :dunno:

Over $700 to replace crystal clear OE class because of the mirror.
