Not worth replacing whole bumper, i recommend getting a black spraypaint =)

I hit my x on the edges of the front bumper now and then and a simple black spraypaint doest it all (because the front bumper is plastic)

Not sure if it will work well for your steal rear bumper tho

It is really hard to tell how deep any scratches/dents and so on are on the jet black paint. I would say replacement will be very expensive, so see what a good bodyshop can do about repairing and respraying the existing bumber. I see you lost a parking sensor housing as well. That should be an easy and cheap DIY as long as the sensor itself wasn't damaged.

Yeah the sensor itself is fine thankfully, just need to get the housing since I know the dealer charges a ton for it.

My wife backed over a barrell :banghead: which scratched our bumper and knocked out a PDC sensor as well. I bought 4 new housings (the others were fading) very cheap from the dealer, just a few bucks a piece (if that).

Are the scratches very deep? Is the bumper cracked? Is there a puncture hole in the bumper or is the paint just missing?

TwinsPoppa 11-12-2008 01:09 AM

Dang Phil !! :wtf: Those #*@!% bastages!! :explode:

I know you feel more sorry than me but ... sheesh, I can only imagine. :(

Every day and when I get to drive the car, I'm always looking for door dings and what not. Ughh, the stress ... I guess I'll get used to it eventually.

Anyways, it looks like the bumber is punctured all the way through - is that right? If the body shop can repair it without replacing the whole bumper, I would think that's the way to go. Just make sure they spray the whole friggin bumper I guess.

This way the money saved can go towards your mods. Hhmm, do I hear the rumble of an X-pipe! :D

Remember, BMW of Bloomfield has good prices on parts.

Maybe that barrel was a wakeup call as to remind her of what the pdc is there for...:bustingup

Thanks for all the advice guys, it just pisses me off!

Anyway, I just went down to survey the damage again and it isn't as bad as it looks (flash made it look worse) and after I cleaned up the area to get rid of dirt and stuff, the only thing is that there are two areas where it seems that the plastic chipped and raised a bit, it almost seems as if it needs to be flattened in and sanded back down. Otherwise most of it looks pretty light scratches (no white shining through).

My first call was to my detailer (who is amazing, on a lot of these boards) and he said he would wetsand it next time I see him. But that won't be for a couple months so I might get an estimate anyway..

jvit27 11-12-2008 02:03 AM

Ugh, that's so criminal. Justifiable homicide if you ask me...

If it was a decent enough hit to knock out the PDC sensor you may want to make sure you have the bumper shocks checked.

Ok here is a better pic of the damage.. seems to me it needs at the very least some wetsanding or possibly a sanding/reprime/paint.. let me know what you guys think, this is with the flash on, with out a bright light it blends in pretty nicely and doesn't look that noticeable so I can at least live with it for a bit..

Phil,

Seems like there's a chunk of paint that chipped off. So, I think it will have to be filled-in and the whole bumper repainted. I'm not a body/paint pro so I'm not sure they can blend that kind of paint. I don't think wet sanding is gonna cut it.

Glad the damage isn't as bad as I thought. Good luck and keep us up to date.

Thanks! I think you are probably right.. I am going to check it out tomorrow or the next day. The creepy thing is, one of my best friends just called me after I texted him and told him what happened to my car.. he just got rear ended on his way home from work too! Both of us in the same day, both of us just got new BMW's (he got a new M3)! Talk about creepy...

Weasel 11-12-2008 09:09 AM

And to keep with this hit and run trend, My X got hit in the home depot parking lot over the weekend bad enough to knock the bumper off the mounts and flake off quite a bit of paint... and didn't even leave a note! :banghead: :angryfire

The home depot is directly across the highway from the dealer, so I limped it over and reattached the bumper. Now just gotta pull it back off to get it repainted...:swear:

She was backing up so fast that the barrell practically ended up under the car. If the PDC alarm went off, she had probably already hit the barrell.

Just ask your kid for the "My child is the honor student at xxxx school" sticker or get the "I love Jesus" one and call it a day. :D

flyingmachine 11-12-2008 11:33 AM

this one should do it and no one will ever hit your bumper again. http://itstomslife.com/IMG_2428.JPG

Uhh oh ... too late ... its starting to spread already! :p:

Sorry to hear that weasel56. Man, I'm not sure how I'd react if that happened to me ... :bawling:

Weasel 11-12-2008 01:59 PM

Yeah, now I get to rent a car next week for the paint shop to fix me up... horray for me! But I'm having them get the hood while they're at it as it has some chips and a scratch down to the metal that are starting to show surface rust.

I vote for an X5 World sticker

anfield 05-11-2009 07:30 PM

wish you was from my neck of the woods mate (great britain) i would have sorted it out for you !! lol, thats an easy repair to do,but dont try these things yourself, unless you have some know how of paintwork, take it to a body shop and get it done tidy!! check my website out www.autoscuffs.com

rastaFarai 05-11-2009 08:03 PM

decent body shop should be able to straighten you out. Something similar happened to me and my body shop had me looking like new. Of course i made the old lady pay.

admranger 05-11-2009 08:06 PM

Isn't there a franchise thingy called "bumper medic" or something like that. Seems that I've seen them running around town before...

Check w/a dealership on who they use to repair their bumper scratches, dings, scrapes. They usually have someone just like they have a paintless dent removal guy, wheel scrape fixer, etc.

Weasel 05-11-2009 08:07 PM

Nice work there, we have similar companies that do some sublet work at our dealer here.

carlgo 05-12-2009 11:15 AM

If the cover is distorted it will probably have to be replaced. You can get new from the dealer or exchange from a place that repairs covers and that is cheaper, but sometimes takes longer if they don't have one in stock.

Chips, small divots and scratches can be repaired. Spot painting a black bumper is not recommended as the blend will show up sooner or later.

No harm in consulting one of those mobile services that goes to dealers and fixes cars in their parking lot (not to be confused with guys that stop you on the street and say they can fix it for $75 bucks while you wait at the curb!).

Really no substitute for the complete body shop routine if you want it like new, but the decal ploy is pretty good sometimes. The chrome woman is another option.

One of my kids put on a "porn star" decal despite my warnings. Sure enough, he was pulled over by an unamused highway patrol woman. My cars will always be controversy-free. Ain't looking for no trouble.
