Transmission kick/jerk b/t 1st and 2nd under load
 

Has anyone out there experienced a hard shift b/t 1st and 2nd when under 1/2 to 3/4 throttle load? This usually happens more often when the car is in the first 10 min of driving.

I have taken it to the dealer and they always come back with "unable to duplicate error". I even took a technician out once to test drive myself but the car didnt do it when he was with me.

Someone told me this is serious... another one said its a software upgrade for the TCU.

I just bought the car off my lease and its an 05 3.0 with 45k miles. Everything about the car is overall cherry but this is bothering me.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

My 2004 X5 4.4i has a harsh shift from 1 to 2 whenever the transmission isn't warmed up (which is almost always).

I've had the transmission EGS unit updated per SI B 24 01 06 (X5 4.4i/4.8is with 6HP26 from 10/03 up to 08/05)

The Dealer just says it's the "warm up program"... I still don't like that shift, but at least it only does it once / drive cycle...

Maybe there is a SIB for your tranny?

Sounds like the harsh shifting problem is when the fluid is still cold, thus thicker viscosity. A software update would change some of the shifting parameters and reset the adaptations. You should be able to reset the basic transmission adaptations yourself. Turn the key on leaving engine off and press the gas pedal all the way down past the downshift click point and hold it for about 30 seconds. You may hear the transmisswion making some noises at this time which would be solenoids operating and such. After that the shifting adaptations should be reset and will re-learn to your driving style when you drive it again.

One question I had about the learning of the driving patters... do you know approximately how long it takes the car to complete this or is it an ongoing learned type of software where it constantly is learning say the last few miles of driving.

when you go to reset the transmission adaption make sure you drive off forward, don't put it in reverse and back up. I'm not sure if this is correct but I read it on the forum when I was trying to do the reset. Good luck!

Update from my post in Feb 2008...

I still was never happy with the 1st to 2nd jerk when the SAV would first start off. I also still had some 3rd to 2nd downshift jerk when allowing the vehicle to coast to a stop.
One week ago I had the adaptation values reset (or deleted?) from the AGS (transmission ECU) and let my spouse drive the vehicle. I just drove it tonight for the first time since the reset and all the issues are gone. Much, much better.
I'm thinking the Dealer never reset the adaptation values...

I had the exact problem and told the dealer and they could not find anything wrong. Then I came back again but this time I left the car in front of the dealer over night so they could understand what I am talking about. They tried to reprogram the tranny but to no avail. The next step for them was to replace the tranny and they did. The problem is solved now.

You may hear the transmisswion making some noises"......i've got absolutly no sound of nothing when i did the procedure.....the kick happend only at cold start once...all good after

Is there something i'not doing right ? Key is on , engine off, press gas all the way 30sec.
Or go with Ripp222 option and go to rhe $tealers for adaptation value reset ?
