After some research, I used the 2.25" magnaflow because that's what seemed to work for most people.

I think any difference in performance or quality between brands would be neglible.

Installed a 2.25" magnaflow on my 4.4i - listen to the sound clip in my sig. BTW the factory welds on the magnaflow are good.

Confirming.... 2.25" vs. 2.5" pipes on an 06 4.8is? I'm going to order soon.

I had the same question.....when I did mine..it seems you could do either....I stuck with what I know worked.....for everyone...2.25" :)

If it's a 2.5" exhaust system, using a 2.25" Xpipe puts additional restriction into the flow - it can be made to fit. I want to avoid this restriction.

Putting a 2.5" Xpipe on a 2.25" exhaust can be made to fit as well with no impact except looks.

Fitting the same size pipe on the exhaust ensures the best flow and it will be a cleaner looking fit. I'm sure you are right, I'm probably going to go out and measure to be sure... just lazy and avoiding laying on the ground in the cold.

I'm looking forward to getting it welded in soon.

I used 2.5 for my 4.8is. It worked great!
