webasto auxillary heater, does it need coolant

got a 3.0d e53 x5 with the he webasto heater(never used it as temps rarley go below 10c) but after driving the car I touch the unit and it is warm nearly hot, should it be?does coolant flow through the unit regardless of whether it is in use or not?any tips would be great
