Oil Separator Valve..Oil everywhere!!

I'm new to X5 world.. And thank you for those who helped me on a couple other topics. Here is my Question... I just had my valve cover gasket replaced because it was leaking.. Now..This morning on my way to work I started to smell another smell of oil burning..(here we go again).. I pulled over and there was oil everywhere... called my BMW service guy..(Super nice)...and said it is a common problem that the Oil Separator Valve is frozen.. It would need to be replaced NOW... Because Oil will go were ever it can go.. I could run into even more issues.. My question is is there any other "related" issues I need to look into while im replacing the separator valve? Tubes, hoses, gaskets or any other thing.. Like I said I just changed my intake valve gasket 2 weeks ago because of leaking. Or is this a direct reflection on why my gasket went in the first place? All your input is much appreciated...

There are literally pages of long threads, here on this board, on your topic.
Other than Weasel, JCL, LoJack et al, (some very knowledgeable posters), much
of the info is anecdotal.

But, the threads, linked below, are worth a read...and, if your "BMW service guy"
is on the ball, he should have ancillary fixes in addition to the seperator valve and
related hoses.

Search Tab is your friend and this problem comes up every year when cold weather hits.

The valve cover gasket is a directly related sign of seperator failure. Thats how mine failed...the dealer will replace the seperator and hoses so you should be ok..

Why do I feel sometimes like no one ever reads any of the stuff you and I post on separators?

I don't know...You know how it is..People don't want to search and they want an answer right away... I learned most of this stuff from you though, dating all the way back to last winter...So at least I read them!

L J:
That's why I linked that page full of threads...
neophytes, 20 minutes into a "catastrophe",
roll on here and scream for help all the time.

Somehow the new ones continue to miss/ignore
the main page full of info, or the Search Tab.

It's all about "me and my problem", these days...

True MD, you would just think if you are spewing oil and the stealer already took a bunch of your money, you might think it was worth putting a little more time in. Thanks for linking those up.

Yeah Primetime I know you are into "separator outreach" as much as I am. Hopefully the more we help the more people we have for outreach. It's still worth it to me if we only help one person avoid that $2000 bill or keep them on the road or whatever we can do. I just wish some of the other people cared enough to put the time in take advantage of what we have already done.

Anyhow, new guy, your dealer should have at least pulled the butterfly in the runner to see if there was oily grime in the intake runners to see if the separator was working right or not. Since they didn't, they are going to get more of your dollars now, because as Primetime said, valve cover gaskets are a symptom (in x5s, a good deal of the time) of separator problems.

The gasket was a tipoff, and your dealer should be scolded for not telling you about the possibility of your separator going south upon learning of your VCG.
