Interior fan problem.
 

I seem to have a problem with the interior fan on my 2001 4.4i.

Even when ignition is switched off and key removed, it sounds as if my interior fan is still running on slow speed. This does not happen every time but I noticed it for at least 5 - 10 minutes the other day when I stopped somewhere and did not get out of the car.

I fitted a new battery last week but maybe it was not a faulty battery anyway that was causing it to go flat over 3 - 4 days.

Any ideas?

Do you have the aux. ventilation? You can set a timer for the fan to come on once you turn off the car, that could be the problem.

Sounds like the classic case of the FSR final stage resistor. There are tons on threads on here about that, and if you want to be sure thats it before buying the part you can pull it out and check it.

The old style one has big fat cooling fins and if it is failing would have a raised line on the epoxy near the plug from the burnt circuit in it. Here's a pic of the old style

Thanks guys, I did a search on the FSR but it only showed faults with missing speeds rather than running when off.:dunno:

As its likely an imminent failure anyway, I will replace it regardless and report back.

So after reading this thread, it insinuates that it is supposed to do this until the car goes into sleep mode, I believe after 16 minutes?

I had this exact problem. Replace your final stage resistor.

Even though some (all?) of the threads on this do not talk about a bad FSR running the fans while the car is off, that was in fact exactly what was happening to me:

At the dealer I have seen yout exact problem, but the customers usually came in for battery drained and hadn't noticed the fan stayed on. What happens is the FSR shorts internally, and can cause intermittent fan speeds, fan not working and fan staying on.

If you pull the under panels out of the way to look at it with a flashlight, you will see a raised line burnt into the epoxy near the plug if it is burnt.

Can you actually hear the fan running and feel air coming out of any of the vents? Are you having battery drain issues? If not, then you probably did not have an FSR issue.
