4.8is Snow tires available?
 

Guys my 4.8is has summer perfrmance tires on it, couple of weeks ago during the first snow fall, it was pretty much useless, thats why this weekend i went to the sky resort with my cousins ML 500.
What do you guys suggest?
I'am not even sure there are the winter tires available for 4.8is front as you all know 275, and back 315?
any help would be appreciated.

I went to tire rack and bought a set of 20" rims and 4 x 275 Pirelli snow/ice. Great package for the winter, back end looks a bit skimpy from behind with the skinny tires but that's life. In past winters I would put the summer rim/tires back on if the weather forecast showed no snow for more than 4 days..... I think I changed rim/tire packages 15 times last year.:thumbup:

You won't find a 315 snow tire.

Damn it, i just did not want to compromise the look of the 4.8is but i guess i don't really have a choice, i might go for the rims that come with 04 and onward, i guess it's style 19" Star Spoke 132? what do you think of this style?
I'am just not sure what to go for that will not compromise the look so much, any suggestions?

i bought 4.6 reps 18x8 all around with 255 55 18 perrelli ice and snow. it is the factory size and the best for winter. handels like a drem and if you check the inside of the drivers door the sizes are there.

BMW N/A is a fan of the P/Scorpions on 17 or 18.

I don't know how bad your snow is (I am Boston MA), but the Michelin Lattitudes seem like they are going to work out great. I've only had them in about 8 inches, but so far so good. They come in OEM sizes

Good question, I read a lot of threads here about this same issue and ended up buying a set of dealer take-offs from a guy on ebay who got them from a dealership selling them b/c someone upgraded their E70 from 18's to 20's and these four wheels were leftover. They came absolutely brand new, with brand new factory all terrain m+s tires, for $1295. I then had to track down a set of hubcentric rings to make them fit on the 2006 4.8is (b/c the hubs are slightly larger on the new E70's) and I now have an excellent winter set up that clears the large front brake calipers as well (some 18's won't so be careful.) The BMW dealership charged me $40 to swap the wheels and billed it as a tire rotation since the wheels were already balanced by the original BMW dealership.

You're right that the 18's won't look as mean as the 20's on the 4.8, esp from the back, but overall the look is way better than the SUV's with 20's and sport tires that I see smashed to smithereens by the ice wall on the side of the road everytime I go back and forth to Tahoe in a snow storm ;-) So, all in all I'm happy. Also, I thought the handling would go from 'amazing' to 'so-so' on dry pavement, and so far I've been pleasantly suprised by how well the 18's handle. Obviously the fact that the tires are brand new helps, but so far I only really notice a big difference when I'm really hanging a turn, like on a freeway onramp, or doing a quick sharp turn like a U-turn, and honestly the softer ride provided by the additional sidewall is a bit nicer on the freeway, with less of 'passengers looking like bobble-heads on stretches of seamed highway' during the 4 hour trips to and from the snow on weekends.

Right now the car is at the stereo shop getting a system installed but once I get it back I'll post some before and after pics.

Went with Michelin Latitude Touring HPs - all season via Tire Rack for $1298 with tax and shipping.

2 - 275/40R20
2 - 315/35/20

They are pretty good in the snow - not great but they stop and handle well.

I'd probably go with something more narrow and winter specific on smaller rims next time though.
