Transmissions Manual vs Automatic

I am trying to justify buying a Manual transmission X5
I'm driving a 99 528iTA (wagon) now...I looked for a manual when I bought it but they are VERY rare.
I enjoy shifting gears....strange as that may seem, ...I'm retired...don't have any schedules...no rush...generally not a lot of traffic here in Ft Lauderdale so...how many of you guys have the same feeling?
What percentage do you think are manuals?

In my view, manuals are rear, and manual X5's tnd to be less loaded then automatic, big percentage of manual x5's don't even come with climate controle.
I think they even stopped making them after 01, so for you to find one will be hard, and if you do it might have a lot of miles, way more then industry average.
Thats just my view, I RECOMMEND GET A TIPTRONIC AUTOMATIC

I got a 04 6 spd locally here in NJ. They are rare. I love manual trannys but If I could get an automatic now I would. I had a good deal for it that's why I bought it.

Daka,
As I've posted to you before, they are rare but findable, imo.
The 6 Spd replaced the non-overdrive 5 speed in ~'04, and
offers much reduced rpms at highway speeds.

Our '01 5 speed is simple to drive and I like that it's different,
though the high speed cruise rpms may be a determent after
the 100K+ mile range, in terms of engine wear.

My wildazzguess is that a couple % of the older Xs were 5 speed
manuals, and about the same for the 6 speed version. I would also
guess that the X3 6 speeds enjoy more adoption, but still probably
in the single digit percentages.

For fun, I clicked on BMW NA CPO car finder and put in manual trans
X5 request. I got the following back, but no idea if they really are
manual transmission models, as the Search also returned a long list
of '07s which did not have a manual option, that I recall.
NEway, good luck on the hunt; if you do find one on a Stlr's lot, the
bargaining power is on your side, imo.
GL,mD

All you need to do is search 'transmission replacement' (or 'blown', or something similar) to justify getting a manual transmission, if that is what you are aiming for...those threads are all about autos. I'd go for the 6 speed, as motordavid said the cruise RPMs are high in the 5speed on the highway, and I would hope the ratios were a little closer when they added a gear.

What jigaro means when he says "don't even come with climate controle" is they can often be found without Premium package, which includes leather(leatherette replaces it), wood trim, and electronic climate control (you get manual dials instead).

Like mD said if it's in your price range go for the '04+ 6 Speed.

I guess I got one without the "climate control" - I have manual knobs. However, I have the leather and a piano black trim.

ZsX5o3 01-09-2009 01:12 PM

are you sure you have leather?

Daka 01-09-2009 01:16 PM

Good info guys...I'm still convinced to get a Manual
By the way, when you list manual in search on Autotrader etc, you get a lot of AutoMANUALS...need to look at the pictures of the dash !!
