Lights on - Trunk Open

OK so my friend is describing this problem to me..

She claims that every time she turns on the headlights, the trunk pops open.

I do not believe her. Anyone ever heard of this? I'm unable to find any reference to this exact problem, but I have found people with the problem of the trunk opening randomly, signaling a possible battery problem but the battery is good.

Any suggestions appreciated :)

This is actually a pretty common failture.. The grips strip on the back of the trunk door has corroded contacts. I have had to have mine replaced 3 times in the past six years - sad part my truck is always garaged. The reason it pops when the lights are on is because the light for the license place is connected to it...

thanks John. is it the rubber strip on the bottom half of the trunk? Where you push to open? I will take a look at it.

I think John is talking about the other rubber strip on the top hatch (where the license plate light resides). You'll probably have to replace the entire trim piece (which requires painting it as well) since the rubber gasket surround that trim usually degrades and let water leak through.

The dealer calls it a grip strip and they can sometimes be found on ebay. A lot of people in the Northwest don't even bother to paint the part and just leave it black. Mine was replaced under warranty so they painted it
