humming noise

hi everyone..just noticed this today..2005 4.4 with 17k..there is a slight humming/buzzing noise coming from the dash..i think..i think i also hear it in the back near the left rear wheel...but anyway it is a constant very low pitch electrical type noise and it ceases when car is shut off and commences when car is started..any inputs/opinions..i dont know if it is a hvac noise or something else...thanks rob

scotchic 01-16-2009 08:27 PM

Does it change when fans turned up/down/off?
Could just need a clean.

humming noise

no it remains constant only time it shuts off is when you shut car off

scotchic 01-16-2009 09:12 PM

Sorry! No idea then.

Rethink: Tinitus/radio amplifier at left rear wheel or as you mention in the repost fuel pump or hedgehog/fsr.

ZsX5o3 01-16-2009 10:57 PM

could it be a wheel bearing? are you hearing it when the car is stopped?

buzzing noise

i have a buzzing/electrical noise in the cabin..it occurs when vehicle is started and ceases when you shut off..it is a faint constant noise...you also hear buzzing noise on outside of vehicle in the rear..by left rear tire and back bumper area...i had 1/4 tank of gas i thought maybe it was the fuel pump..i put in gas to 3/4 and noise is still present...could it be fuel pump on the way out..i have no other issues...what do you think...thanks rob

I have a similar, if not the same, humming noise in my dash. I think it has to do with climate controls. If I shut my fan off, the humming stops. I haven't researched it further and since everything still works, I'm not going to mess with it. Maybe next time when I bring my X to the stealer, I will get it checked out.

aak 01-21-2009 05:33 AM

If you find it is only coming from the dashboard check out the post by fatboyoz about this issue.

http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...ngine-off.html

Those two little vents in the climate control area have a sensor behind them which lets the climate control system know what the cabin temperature is so that the correct temperature air can be blown in to the car. There is a little fan back there that sucks the air in to the vents and over the sensor. The noise you are hearing may be that fan - in my case because it is a clicking/ticking/electrical noise it may be that the fan is broken or inhibited from spinning freely due to dust/gunk.

Actually in my case the noise is always there - even when the key is not in the car. So, I'm going to change the final stage resistor in the hope that this will cure the problem.

Here the same noise

Hello,

My X5 4.6is is making the same noise from the dash. Looks like it is coming from a fan. Try this: Set the airco as low as possible (16 degrees celcius in Europe), the fan stops spinning then and the noise is gone.

I will have to find the exact fan, but don't want to disable my dashboard yet.. Does anyone knows where the fans are located. The one that's making the noise is located behind the instrument cluster is guess...

Greetz,
Niels

Niels - check the link I posted in my last post. It will show you where the fan is and if you read the last posts it will show you how to get at it too.

humming noise

hi everyone..need help..i have been hearing a faint electrical humming noise inside the car..if i idle car in park and just tap the gas i hear the noise become a higher pitch and when i let off the gas it goes down...it sounds like it is coming from the dash..but you also hear the humming sound when you stand outside of the car near the rear left wheel...the best way i can describe it is the sound of a electric fuel pump...it is very annoying..can anyone advise..thanks rob

primetime 02-06-2009 03:32 PM

Idle tensioner pulley...Its high pitched right? annoying too... Its probably less noticeable when the car is fully warmed up, but still there right?

tonycajjo 02-06-2009 03:32 PM

are you a doctor in Arkansas? (too soon?)

Is your radio on? oh wait outside too? if a cold start it could be secondary air system, mine hums like a son of a gun. i'm removing it soon.

cavx5 02-06-2009 03:33 PM

noise

yes it is there..only difference is that you hear it by the left rear tire

primetime 02-06-2009 03:34 PM

Try to isolate where the sound is coming from, is it coming from outside? like inside the engine bay somewhere? or is the noise coming from the inside of your car when you are inside the cabin?

cavx5 02-06-2009 03:42 PM

humming noise

i can only track it down to 2 places..on is inside car from dash the other is read of car loudest from left rear..i opened hood and did not hear it..thanks rob

primetime 02-06-2009 04:02 PM

Its something else then...I'm not sure but from what you're sayin it doesn't sound like its coming from the engine bay..

tonycajjo 02-06-2009 04:23 PM

could it be something faulty with the air suspension? i know you said dash, but sounds can be deceiving. is the x sitting right? do you have air suspension in the back?

scotchic 02-06-2009 05:08 PM

Just a guess: FSR/Hedgehog.

It can cause all sort of problems and noises.

hi everyone just got back from the dealer...made the tech hear the noise as i described in my previous thread and he thinks it is the fuel pump...so i left it at the dealer for further investigation...if it is he said they have to remove rear seat for the fix...2005 x5 with 17k...is it a big job qm....is it a bit premature for fuel pump to go...will let you know when i get response from dealer for confirmation of problem..thanks rob

hi everyone..got the x back this morning from the dealer...humming/buzzing noise was as i suspected..it was the fuel pump..they replaced with an new one covered under warranty..bumper to bumper still valid till 06/2009..if anyone has similar noise maybe check your fuel pump...thanks rob

buzzing noise

hi everyone...i was finally able to exactly pinpoint the area of the noise..i had a buzzing/humming noise in the car that appeared to be coming from the dash and on the outside of the car near the rear left wheel well.....i thought it was the fuel pump..brought to the dealer and they confirmed it was fuel pump and replaced it...noise is much better but yesterday i heard that the noise is coming from under rear seat...that is where fuel pump is but it was replaced..is there anything else under the seat that could be producing the noise...thanks rob

anerbe 02-17-2009 03:54 PM

have a 4.4/4.8, or the rear leveling suspension as an option? could be the compressor?

cavx5 02-17-2009 10:52 PM

buzzing noise

hi..i have a 2005 x5 4.4 with prem/sport pack..it only has rear self leveling air suspension..the noise sounds like it is coming from under the rear seat..thanks for any help..rob

BMWLOVER 02-17-2009 11:00 PM

I think the compressor is right behind the rear seat.

hi again..still have humming noise from rear of vehicle..just wondering if it could be catalytic converters or fuel pressure regulator..i had the fuel pump changed by dealer last week..noise is still there but i have to say it is not as loud..2005 x5 4.4..appreciate any comments/advise..thanks rob

TwinsPoppa 02-18-2009 03:16 PM

I think the cats are under/in front of the front passengers. So, probably not from them. BTW ... I didn't think cats made any noise. :dunno:

I have a 2006 X5 3.0i with 23,500 miles on it. I am also getting a buzzing/static noise from under the R/R side. Sounds like it is coming from directly behind the R/R wheel.

Did you ever find a fix? I'll post up a youtube video in a bit.

Foose 03-26-2012 12:00 PM

It might be coming from the L/R...

I hope something doesn't suddenly fail and leave me stranded. Please take a look at the video and let me know what it might be
