What is servotronic it's listed as a $400 option on an 06 I'm going to see tomorrow

What servotronic is...there is a variable valve in the steering box that is fed by the car speed signal. At low speeds it gives the power steering a boost by opening the valve more. At higher speeds the valve closes and there is no/less power steering boost.

The Servotronic control unit adjusts the amount of steering assistance to suit the speed of the vehicle. An electromagnetic valve accurately controls the amount of force applied by the steering hydraulics, enabling outstandingly precise steering that suits your current driving situation. Conventional power steering systems, by contrast, regulate the power steering in relation to the engine's RPM. The electromechanical steering system EPS uses an electric motor to achieve the same effect.
Thanks to Servotronic, driving along narrow streets or parking becomes easier as it requires minimum effort to turn the steering wheel. The power assist progressively decreases when the vehicle speeds up, ensuring greater stability, improved precision and smoother vehicle behaviour.

I thought power assist was standard on most cars these days? It was an option huh ... better check what the deal is on my 04 4.8.

Probably left it off standard for those who want better steering feedback.

I have it and dislike it (Although I am still adjusting)

It is nice around parking lots and at very low speeds, but I don't like the driving feel until I hit about 65 MPH.

The biggest problem I have is i will be driving at about 50, then I slow down to take a turn, accelerate and take the turn way too tight because the steering has gone soft on me!

Servotronic offers true speed-dependent power steering, in which the amount of servo assist depends on road speed, and thus provides even more comfort for the driver. The amount of power assist is greatest at low speeds, for example when parking the car. The greater assist makes it easier to maneuver the car. At higher speeds, an electronic sensing system gradually reduces the level of power assist. In this way, the driver can control the car even more precisely than with conventional power steering. :thumbup:

I have the servotronic steering in the 4.6is, and drive non-servotronic X5s every day at work. I personally prefer the servotronic myself.
