Another stalling X5

Have read so much about stalling X5's at low speeds that my head is going to explode!:yikes:

X5 3.0i Sport E53

Just wondered if anyone can shed any light on my situation. Symptoms are, car runs ok until coming to a stop i.e. junction or slow corner, rev counter will undulate up and down and sometimes, if it's really bad unudulating, it will stall. Car starts right back up and off I go again.

(If revs start undulating and I put it in to neutral then the revs stop undulating).

Have so far changed the idle control valve and DISA valve. Have cleaned the MAF sensor although have read that it could be this at fault although at £240 I would rather have a better undertsanding of whether it could be this.

From the engine bay with the hood lifted, I can hear a loud sort of suction noise like air being forced through something or into something. Don't know if this is normal or not:dunno:

I put the reader on the car today and it came up with two errors relating to "oxygen sensor adaptation limit reached Cyl #1-3" and "Catalytic convertor efficiency, Cyl #1-3. Have reset these codes and will see if they come back.

Sorry for the long post but before throwing more money at it thought I may try and get some expert advice before sending it to the indy for a thorough check.

Many thanks.

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak? Check your hose from the air filter to the intake for cracks.
Another thought is it could be your CPS.

I've had just about the same problem. I was throwing money at the car fixing this and that, none of which resolved the issue. Then I figured it may be the ethanol they put in gas now adays.. so I started using Shell V-power and the issue was dramatically reduced (happens ALOT less frequently, like once every 6+ months).
Oh well..

Thanks for the replies. Have just received my copy of the Bentley BMW X5 manual so a good read coming on!. I suspect it is an air leak although I have checked from the air filter right through to the idle control valve area and can't find anything so far. I know it only has to be a small leak and therefore not visible to the naked eye so it could be a smoke test or similar.

Car runs on LPG so I don't think it's to do with the fuel although I think the LPG is a lot more sensitive to the problem. (In the UK the LPG was half the cost of petrol although it is starting to catch up with the price of petrol:()

Will take the intake manifold off today and see what's going on around there.

Thanks again.

Hi, Been reading your posts. My x5 has developed the exact same fault, I got it booked in the garage and was told something about "Coils" !!! not sure though. did you get your problem resolved ? if so then what was the problem ? it's driving me nuts and in 1 day, mine stalled 8 times..

RichiRich 04-23-2009 06:37 AM

Mine was doing this also...

once a day.....once every other day..........I was going nuts trying to figure out...

then I boiled it down to an idle control valve.......

then it went away for the most part.....two weeks later happened once pulling into the grocery store parking lot...started her right up..........and off I went.......

(pulling up to a red light, stop sign, slowly rounding a turn (corner)) any and all of these I have stalled on.....it is gone for now.....

Knock on wood!

I have/had the same issue. I took the mass air sensor off. Took the little plastic grill off and doused it with brake cleaner (no residue). I also made sure everything (large hoses & clamps) are connected properly. It has being three weeks and I haven't had this issue.

Hey, Thanks for the tips, it's a mission for the weekend. I hope this works coz it's driving me nuts.

replacing O2 sensors should resolve the issue. i had mine stalled during winter month last couple of years. one day, i scanned if immediately right after it stalled, guess what it said O2 sensor bank 1 sensor 1. stop by my guy and had it changed. it never stalls since.

Big "J" 04-23-2009 02:03 PM

Might be the O2 sensor but, I wouldn't rule out one of the camshaft position sensors.
