This a common problem with BMW's, It happened on my 525i. As everyone suggested here, clean the contacts and seal them with dielectric grease to prevent water condensation.

Sometimes the bad spot is all the way through the metal. In this case I have heard of people soldering over the "hole". This was a major problem on E38 7 series.

Thanks for the advice. I have an X5 and it seemed like I had to find the sweetspot to get the tail light to stay lit. I finally wound up pulling out the tail light assembly and found there was a hole burned through at the contact point. I did as you suggested and dropped some solder into the hole and it works (You dont heven have to sand it down as a bump seems to make better contact with the socket). FYI - I highly recommend using an extended reach 8MM wrench and 1/4 socket for this operation because BMW made the access area for someone with very small hands, especially on that last nut.
