Primetime is right, and has read the numerous posts on this subject.

Let me clear up some confusion. There are 3 SIB's for the same problem. Each SIB covers a different engine model. M62 (4.4 liter 8 cyl), N62/62TU (4.4 liter 8 cyl), and M54 (3.0 liter 6 cyl). In another thread I posted the SIB for the M54 engine. I think the others have been posted before as well. That fix, while evidently not easy to do because of access issues, isn't overly complex either. The fix for the M62 is much more involved which does require heated wraps, etc.

One thread with lots of great info is called:
"Thanks for nothing BMW NA ( Blue smoke/Oil loss/Oil separator )"

I have a different problem now. I just replaced the oil separator and valve cover gasket. I don't have any smoke problems like I did when i first blew the valve cover gasket. Now, I have oil around the oil filler cap. What could be the reason for this? I know this could be the oil separator but I just did that. And the hoses are new as well. And im not having any smoke issues. I know that the oil around the filler cap was cleaned when the separator and cover cover gasket was done, because I did the repair. Any help would be great!

cscoup..Since you got your new seperator and valve cover gasket put on. The systems are most likely doing their job correctly. But are you still taking short trips? I know its very cold in Iowa or has been recently and the short trips don't allow the engine to warm up long enough to burn off that extra condensation. Clean off the oil cap when your done driving for the day, and clean off the extra moisture. Try to drive longer trips (at least 30 mins) maybe like twice a week to help burn off that excess condensate. Do this at least until spring gets here and temps warm up outside.. You don't want pressure to build up in that new crankcase again and have your oil cap completely pop off when you start it..Since you have a new vcg that area is probably sealed up pretty good..I've seen oil caps pop right off when starting the car. And his car had a new seperator and vcg installed also. I guess the pressure has to escape from somewhere..

Like I said before. Did you install the heated wraps per the SIB? If not, then you just changed the old oil separator with a new one and really didn't fix the problem since the FIX for your engine per the SIB was the heated wrap kit.
