Removing Cigarette Smells
 

Hi Guys - My car smells of stale cigarettes thanks to the previous owners father. As the 'magic tree' air freshener has lost its smell the stale cigarette smell has increased. The ashtrays don't seem to have been used so either he was chucking them out of the window or the ashtrays were replaced Either way - I want to get rid of the smell - not just hide it.

I will get the car valeted but I know this will not get rid of the smell. I was wondering if anyone had personal experience of getting either of the following done to remove smells from their car:

- 'smoke bomb' treatment
- ozone generator

Are they effective? Does anyone know where in the UK I can rent an industrial ozone generator to leave running in my car overnight or for a while when it is unoccupied? How long do you need to run it for in order to kill the odours?

Problem is, the smell is in the fabric.....like the headliner and carpet.

bicarbonate of soda sprinkle it about the car leave overnight and then hoover up does the job great

Farmer - I've read that too. I will try it along with leaving charcoal in the car. However, I have heard that ozone and smoke bomb treatments are the only effective way to get rid of it permenantly since the smoke is sitting in the headlining and the seats etc. I read that the ozone/smoke bomb thing actually kills the bacteria that cause the smells but it all sounds a bit sci-fi to me.

I'll pop down to tesco's and grab some bicarbonate soda - it doesn't effect the colour of the carpets or anything does it?

That Ozone generator does work. You leave it running for a couple hours with the heater on and then you do the same with the AC on. It does a good job in getting rid of the smell. I've seen it done many times on many different makes and models. I used to work at a car dealer years ago...We had this device in the service shop..

Well at least on TV they make it look like everything smells miraculously clean and fresh, haha. I have heard that the ozone is awesome.

Many (not all) detail shops have an ozone generator that Primetime is talking about. Check a few detail shops in your area, I would think you'd be able to find a shop that has one. Have them do an interior detail w/ odor removal included, that way you'll get the seats, carpet, dash, and the odor removal done. Around here an interior detail goes for $75-$125 depending on the shop.

The other option is stuff called SCOE 10X. (it stands for super concentrated odor eliminator). They sell the stuff on their website and it does work like nothing else I've ever seen. We used it for dog pee odor on a carpet in our bedroom, and it was the ONLY thing that worked. I'm not sure how you'd fog the interior of a car with it though....?

no does not affect the carpets we had a terrible smell in our old jeep so i used the soda and then hoovered it out next day and smell was gone ps just make sure it is dry

I removed the smoke smell by:

1.Thorough hoover inc under seats
2.A/C Deodoriser, basically a small canister set in the footwell and AC left on recirculate. Kills the bacteria inside the AC unit
3.Sprayed 10:1 APC (all purpose cleaner) on all headlining and interior trim and wiped over with damp microfibre
4.APC on interior carpets, agitated and then Wet Vac'ed
5.Wet Vac'ed again but this time with a Autobrite flavoured Carpet Deodoriser
6.Cleaned and conditioned leather with Raceglaze Cleaner and Conditioner.

Sounds like a lot of work but was done over 3hrs. The car was owned by an occasional smoker, so it wasn't that bad compared to some.
