Possible Amplifier Failure
 

I think I my amplifier may have failed on my 2005 X5 3.0i due to moisture getting into the rear driver side quarter panel. The rubber grommet keeps moisture from getting into the body that is underneath the trunk lid came loose on the side that connects to the body of the vehicle. I think that this is where the moisture came from and has since been remedied. The rear driver side quarter panel is now dried out, but I have zero sound output coming from the speakers and I suspect that the moisture killed the amplifier. Just my luck, my warranty has expired.

I talked to the dealer, and they suspect the same, but I'm scared to see what the cost will be for the dealer to replace it. Does anyone have any tips on a do it yourself replacement. This is a non-navigation setup.

If you sure the AMP is dead... just buy one off the ebay and follow the instruction at the homepage of this forum and replace it your self and save $$$.

Is it a DSP or non-DSP amp?

If/when you replace it yourself DIY it should work, but it really should be coded to the vehicle when it is replaced. So if you do want to buy one and install it yourself to save a few $$$ then call the dealer and get a price on getting the amp coded to the vehicle. (should be 1/2 hour to 1 hour labor charge)

And be sure to check the plug connectors for corrosion. And if you were parked on an incline when the leak happened it could also be the rear sunroof drains clogged as the water drains from the headliner down the rear trim pillar to that area as well.

Sorry, I should have indicated that. It's a non-DSP amplifier.

Thanks for the information. I actually checked the sunroof drain at the recommendation of a friend who had an issue with a Pathfinder about ten years prior. All was well, but that's when I discovered the loose grommet for the wiring harness between the trunk lid and the body. That actually explained the stereo issues as well as some foggy windows that were becoming more and more regular. I thought that was due to the excessive amount of snow we've received this year and the frequent trips to the mountain.

So question to all. Is there some sort of check I can do with a voltmeter to ensure that the amplifier is in fact the root of the problem?

I've been through this crap....
 

My DSP amp was damaged due to water damage, I guess my sunroof drain was clogged due to accumulation of leaves, debri, twigs, etc. BMW took apart my sunroof and had to clean out the drain and put my sunroof aaaaall back together, 11 hours in labor = $1300.

Non DSP amps, BMW quotes you about $590, DSP, $1600!!!!! So I said just fix the flooding and water damage and disconnect the amp, I can do without audio and keyless entry for a while. Trying to look for a DSP amp online.

Does anybody know how you can prevent from this water damage happening again? Other than keeping your sunroof closed AT ALL TIMES cuz now I'm paranoid......I'm also afraid of carwashes now...WTF.
