Front end shake (non braking)
The car shakes when I accelerate between 60-80 mps. No problems braking, turning, or at lower speeds. I had an alignment done and it seemed to work for a day or so.
The front tires are cupping, so I know something is off. I searched many threads but it seems that most front end shakes occur when braking. I've also noticed a very unusual vibration when the car is idle or in reverse. Please ask me any questions, I really need to get this fixed....I can ever seem to mod my car cause something is always wrong with it:bawling: |
Several issues: Cupping tires-?rotate
?Malalignment-realign Tranny Issues-check out Answer: Take it back and have 'em work it up. Too many issues to do yourself. |
does vibration originate in the steering? were the tires rotated?
(Trying to tell if it is in the wheels or alignment vs other mechanical.) |
You need a wheel balance or you have a bent wheel. If you have another set of wheels try swapping them out to see if the shake goes away.

The vibrating when it does occur comes up from the gas pedal and goes through the steering wheel. It feels like it starts in from the tires, but even when I brake it's not a smooth feeling. Really rough, I attributed that to the tires but now I'm not so sure. Also, I had used a fuel injector treatment twice (prestone). I'm not sure if that's what caused the vibrating, but wanted to throw that out there. I had brakes/rotors/CV boots changed 5K ago. |

Any chance that running the 4.6 stag setup on my 4.4 cause problems? |

1. Tirerack has a nice flowchart for diagnosing such problems, go through it. (I posted it in reply #15 on this thread)
2. Do not rotate tires, per BMW. (see attached note) 3. Go get your wheels and tires rebalanced. Make sure they user the Hunter road force measurement system (GSP9700) that BMW uses. (See attached SIB 360104) Go to the Hunter website and do a search of tire shops that use it. It's worth every penny and it will identify a bent wheel and save you any further costly repair. Plus while the car is up you and the tire guys can take a look at the suspension parts...pick their brains and see if they think anything is screwed up (control arm bushings, brake calipers, etc.) http://www.hunter.com/pub/product/OE...769T/index.htm http://www.gsp9700.com/pub/search/FindGSP9700.cfm 4. After that go get alignment done at the dealer. Also worth the money IMHO. Make sure they thoroughly look at your suspension before the alignment is done because if anything is worn or needs changing then your alignment will be pointless. Also find out how long they warranty the alignment for before you get it done. http://www.hunter.com/pub/product/OE...757T/index.htm 5. Post an update. BTW, I don't have any vibrations (front end shake) when braking and as far as I know it's not common (and DEFINITELY not normal!). What is a Prestone fuel injector treatment? |
This vibration is getting me nuts!!!
Friend, I have the same problem. It started as a vibration when stopped on a red light while pressing the brake pedal. It only happened on D and R, if you put in N it was just smooth.
I tried everything. Replacing motor mounts was the first, then camshaft sensor, plugs, filters... you name it. Today on the road it just got worse. It started shaking when accelerating from 80KM to 100KM and the vibration is now shaking the mirrors at idle. I've researched a lot about this "vibration" and couldn't find anything conclusive. It seams to be a BMW gremlin, as you can find it related to different BMW models. Now I'll check the front transmission (!!!???) If this work out I'll gladly post it! |

Have you checked the driveshaft? Sounds like your guibo needs replacing as it's causing excessive flexing of the driveshaft. It's not a gremlin. Item # 2.

Thanks a lot! Very Helpful!
As soon as I Check it I'll post a reply. |
You have more than one issue going on here if the car vibrates at idle as well has highway speeds. Gotta be something in the drivetrain for the car to vibrate at idle.
|
And from the sound of it, you would save money by paying for a proper diagnosis at the dealer vs throw numerous parts at it in hopes to find the problem. ~$100 diagnosis fee costs less than +/- $500 in parts.

Friend,
That was the first thing I did, but they couldn’t find anything, the diagnosis showed no ERROR – no FAUT CODE. All those parts I mentioned we’re their suggestions that “maybe” causing the vibration but there was no assurance and I’d have to pay for labor/hour + parts (a lot of course $$$), that’s the reason I choose and independent and very professional mechanic to sort it out. If you Google “BMW X5 VIBRATION AT IDLE” or “BMW X5 VIBRATION WHEN STOPPED” you will find dozens of people having the same problem without solution and not only X5’s, but a large variety o BMW models. Don’t get me wrong, I love my bimmer, it’s the second I have, my first was a 325I and it also have it’s issues. A BMW car is a real pleasure to drive and with such elaborated engineering is not acceptable that something like a “vibration” when you’re pressing the brake pedal at a red light should turn out to be such a hard thing to fix. |
I'm having a complete fluid drain and carbon removal done on my X this week. I'll let you know if it helps with the vibration at idle. As far as the shaking goes while driving, I found a place that does alignments proper like and haven't had a problem since.

Here is the Vibe Chart I mentioned before (pdf included).

Follow-up (I'll update this list periodically):
Here are places that I know of that use the Hunter GSP9700 for tire balancing AND the Hunter Auto34 for tire mounting. - Lexus of Mt. Kisco, NY 275 Kisco Avenue MOUNT KISCO, NY 10549 Phone: 914-241-3500 - BMW Of Bridgeport 43 North Avenue BRIDGEPORT, CT 06606 Phone: 203-334-1672 - Mercedes Benz of White Plains 50 Bank Street WHITE PLAINS, NY 10606 Phone: 914-949-4000 - Bert's Motor Works, Inc. 95 East Main Street ELMSFORD, NY 10523 Phone: 914-592-4748 To find a list of places that use the Hunter GSP9700 use this link. Make sure to pick a place that has the "StraightTrak LFM." Hunter GSP9700 Wheel Vibration Control System An FYI, most dedicated tire shops do not have a GSP9700 AND an Auto34 because they are very expensive and only mandated by some manufacturers like BMW. From a Hunter rep: BMW rims and tire combinations are tough to change on some of their models because BMW uses a designation AH rim which means it has two asymmetrical humps built into their rims that will only allow a bead roller type machine to find the flat spot of the hump to push the bead past. Never allow a side shovel type machine change your tires." |

FYI, within a month of having my 215s, somehow the front passenger side wheel was found bent when I was noticing increased vibration. I do not remember ever hitting anything, but then again it had been in the shop for a few days on an unrelated issue, so not sure what happened during that time. |
