Snow experts in here! Help!

Taking the X5 (4.4) to Mammoth this weekend for skiing. I have Michelin Diamaris tires. The plan was to just use them but put chains on all four wheels. Is this a safe route or do I really need to put all weather tires on as well? Obviously would rather not go that route as it is very expensive but I want to do what's best.

Thanks!

if they allow chains and you put them on then i wouldn't see the need for snow tires.

Here's the last guy that didn't want to go for snow tires....

Best route would be all weather tires and carry one set of chains in case you need them. Chances are though you will be fine with just a decent set of tires. They keep the roads pretty clear and unless its storming you won't really need the chains.

Agreed. We've been to quite a few ski resorts, and have never had a problem negotiating the roads, and we used to take my 2WD Yukon with all-season tires quite a bit.

The Diamaris tires are not all season however...

You need to read some of numerous threads on this topic (especially reply #26 of the thread mentioned above). Here are a couple of important points though:

1. Your tires are not snow, winter or even all season tires, don't expect them to handle well in those conditions. If you do, you will be unpleasantly surprised. They are high performance summer tires only.
2. BMW does not recommend putting chains on the front wheels at all.
3. BMW only recommends putting approved chains on the rear wheels of your car, but only on 17" wheels / tires.

Whatever you do outside of that advice is at your own risk really, and against better judgment.
