Sevice engine soon light ???

Hello, I have an 01 X5 with 109K miles. I had this light come on a year ago or so, all I needed was to get a new cap. Now the light is on again and I'm wondering if it needs another cap or something more? Does anyone have any input on what this could be??? I've done a search but nothing besides the gas cap or just plan bad gasoline come up. I put shell premium all the time. Engine runs smooth and quite, has plenty of pick up. Thanks:dunno:

wells it can be bad cap again, O2 sensors, leak air intake, bad AMF etc...
I say get code read to be sure what is it.

Can be a lot of things. Many times it's due to something in the exhaust/emission system. It wouldn't be the gas cap per se. You need a code reader or take to dealer.

Can I have autozone scan it for me??? Do they charge? Thanks...

Agree it could be a lot of things, but one of the common ones is the gas cap. If it leaks or isn't seated properly the SES light comes on due to a perceived leak in the evaporative emissions control system.

You are right JCL, but having to go to the dealer to get it reset for a gas cap fault is a thing of the past (E36 3 series I believe...ask me how I know!). On X5's you just put it on right and problem should go away for good.

Unless the cap is leaking, then you go to the dealer. See the original post. Not uncommon.

JCL was right. I cleaned the cap around the rubber seal. I put it back on and took a long highway cruise. I let it rip for a while then the light went off.... Hasn't turned back on since. I think it was the cap or just bad gasoline. Either way, thanks to everyone. You guy's rock!
