self level suspension inactive on my 4.8is

I got a flat tire this morning and now it is reading "SELF LEVEL SUSP. INACTIVE". My car has the full adjustable ride height and non of the lights are on for the level. The car has 3 different lights for low normal and high and non are on and the button does nothing. I am not under warrenty either. Is this a simple fix or will it go away? Like i said now i can not control up or down for the ride height. That button is dead.

does one corner appear to be lower than the others? your photo shows a lowered stance or maybe its just the photo. i recently popped and airbag at the rear and didnt even throw a light on. self level has sensors at the rear with a small lever attached to the lower suspension your flat may have stripped it off or damaged the small bundle of wire connections at the rear inside or the wheel well

Check the simple stuff first like the fuse. If there is a relay, check that as well. Don't always assume it is the most expensive, hardest to get at piece that has failed.

for the past month or two if i have it in its lowest mode and walk away for about and hour and come back the front right side will be completley low. When i hit the unlock button in about 10 seconds that side will fill up with air and the car will be level again. I am assuming there is a hole in the bag. The car now does not let you have any control over the suspesion it just reads self level inactive.

im starting to think the air suspension on these are a joke

You might have a leak. Time to go to the dealer.

zerochief 02-28-2009 07:38 PM

You will need access to a GT1 DIS system in order to troubleshoot the problem. If you want to avoid dealer pricing, find a good independent with these capabilities.

X5 Meister 02-28-2009 07:46 PM

Hey zerochief-

I know local BMW CCA chapters often have a tool borrowing/rental program. Maybe that's something X5 World should look into?! Everyone pitches in to get a GT1 DIS. Jeff or someone would be the caretaker of it.

zerochief 02-28-2009 07:58 PM

Thats a good idea especially for members out of warranty. I went through the nightmares of the "selflevel susp inact" error for several months. At least I was under CPO at the time... now I'm on my own. You can pick up a laptop version of the DIS online for about a grand. The real thing is a lot more.

X5 Meister 02-28-2009 08:01 PM

What does the laptop version consist of? Just software or an entire computer with diagnositc cable, etc.?

zerochief 02-28-2009 08:07 PM

Laptop version:

X5 Meister 02-28-2009 08:27 PM

So laptop version is basically software that be used on any laptop right? (With the cable and yellow thing.) Got a good source for buying it?

zerochief 02-28-2009 08:35 PM

There's a lot of them on Ebay. I believe they require a pentium based laptop.

X5 Meister 02-28-2009 08:57 PM

Duh. I feel stupid.

Next question. Most seem to be coming from China. Yikes. The least expensive in USA seems to be $1100 without a laptop. Sorry for the additional dumb questions. Is this a BMW part? Does the big free-standing unit have additional functions this one doesn't? How does one update the software on it (it says v55 is current...that's not the same as Progman is it?)

IMOLAredNC4.8is 03-01-2009 12:23 AM

how much would it cost to replace the front strut assuming a leak is the problem ?

I think the strut is 900 and 300 or 400 labor at dealer. Just had that diagnosed last month. if u have no light neat the button then could be something else.

HuskerX5 03-01-2009 09:18 PM

If the strut/airbag is found faulty and needs replaced, provide me the P/N as I get up to 27% off list price at my Local BMW dealership. The BMW list price matrix here in the Midwest starts off less than the East or West coast so the final discount is even greater. They have a flat $15 shipping and no tax if you are out of state. Not promoting anything here, except perhaps paying less for OE parts.
Let me know...happy to help....

Weasel 03-01-2009 10:08 PM

I think Twinspoppa just bought one of the laptop GT1's from ebay... wonder if he got it in yet?

x4life 03-16-2009 12:12 PM

so what was the outcome

Imola did you ever get you X5 repaired?
I rece, ntly got the same issue with my 04 4.8is
The dealer told me 732.oo for the part and 374.85 for the labor.
