ENGINE cleaner

...I want to clean my engine, the oil bay. I`ve been told that after you take your used oil out there is a cleaner that you put in your engine and run the car for 5-10min. That cleans the residual stuff that was accumulated over time.

Is that accurate and can someone help me with this one?

This has been discussed extensively. If you use a high quality gas with Techron then you are fine. Check out Top Tier Gasoline For added cleaning, add 1 bottle of BMW fuel system cleaner per 3,000 miles. Anything beyond that is speculation and not factory backed.

... I understand however I was asking about the engine as in the oil bay not fuel itself. cleaning the oil bay

If you really want to do it, I would use this;

Products - MotorClean

I think Weasel says he has used the BG products at the dealership before. I am not sure which exact BG product it was. My guess is the Quick Clean.

BG Products, Inc.

I used the Liqui Moly motor clean in my high mileage e36 a few months back. You add it to the oil and run for about 10 minutes, then immediately do an oil change. My guess is that the BG product is used the same way. You can also just do a couple quick oil and filter changes after a few thousand miles. That should help clean thigs up as well.

...i have used 5W40 oil on it however i have like 160k km on it :)

No problem. Like I said, I used it in my e36 with 285,000 miles on it. I didn't want to try it out on my X5 as it has a lot less miles. BMW doesn't really recommended any oil additives or cleaners, so keep that in mind before you use it.

Good luck!
