what oil weight are you using with over 100k miles

I have an 04 3.0 with 120k miles. Currently i am using 5w-30 oil. Should i use a different weight? I noticed oil is burning faster. Any thoughts.

You can try 5w-40, which is also recommended by BMW for your year/model X5.

If you are still burning it quick, you can probably step up to a 10w-40. In your warmer climate and at your mileage, I don't think it would do any harm.

What kind of 5-w30 are you using? I ask as I know that the Mobil 1 is technically too thin according to what I have read. The BMW 5-w30 is on the heaver end of the 5-w30 spectrum so you may not burn as much with that and I think depending on the oil type it may have a higher flash point so it won't burn off as readily.

thanks for your response. I am using the BMW 5-30. I will try the 5-40 and see how that goes.

Mobil1 is TOO thin. It burns off way too easy. Use BMW Synthetic 5w-30. Just stick with what BMW recommends.

^^ If you look at the 2004 X5 owners manual on X5world's homepage you will see that BMW actually lists 5w-40 before 5w-30 as the recommended oil weight. Nothing wrong with using that at all. Especially in the OP's warmer climiate. It is probably a better choice for him actually.
