Help Required BMW 3.0 X5 Diesel

I am here for some help. I have a 2001 X5 which i brought 6 months ago. Full service history but the last service was an oil change so i am about to need a service prob inspec 1. I would like to do this myself. The car has 56k on the clock. I have seen how to change the oil which is fine, and the micro filter. is there anything else, is there a pollen filter if so how easy is this to change. also an air filter.
I have noticed when i put my foot down i get black smoke coming out of the exaust. not loads but quite a bit. i put this down to needing new oil.
Also does anyone have views on using an engine flush when changing the oil.
Thanks for you assitance. I dont want to go to the stealer as i enjoy working on the car myself and then i know for sure it has been done. Does anyone reccomend a good oil at this mileage

hi and welcome, micro filter is pollen filter,2 types available,standard or carbon, black smoke normal especially if car not driven fast or doing long journeys, diesel injector cleaner added to fuel every 5000miles helps. if you look at home page you might find info on what to check for inspection service.. you can buy manual from Bentley Publishers - Automotive Books and Repair Manuals . book does not cover diesel engines as they are sacred to bmw but many usefull items in manual, engine flush pobably not necessary.your oil will always get black very soon after changing.

Your oil will go black very soon after a change that’s nornal, I put mobil 1 10-30w in mine , next change at 44k will go for 5-40w heavier oil as temps are real hot out here, always fully synthetic, injector cleaner like the previous post said, redex or stp stuff. That should take care of the fuel filter that has been mentioned on many posts should last a very long time if you use good quality fuel, oil filter is the easiest in the engine bay to change, now air filter I have no idea but need to find out, you do have to take off the engine cover front end pops out if you lift it, and as you reach say 30-40degree slant pull it towards you as the rear end does not lift out vertically but comes off if you pull it (there are 2 hex screws at the end of the engine cover that do not need to be removed just loosened and they are tricky to get to, and number of other 6 I think that need to come out before you attempt the lifting up and pulling) but that is all I know.

Black smoke? I would add the fuel line cleaners etc etc and take the x on a nice run, check your coolant level for sure!!!!! At the 50/50 mix get the bmw stuff, and let me know if you find out how to get the air filter out please…enjoy

lovely thanks for the advice guys. the black smoke is if i floor it otherwise no smoke is seen. i think i will do the oil, filter and micro filter as these are easy. I may struggle with the air filter. do you know how often this should be changed at all.

just did my air filter and it's really hard to remove and install it back.

include your fuel filter and the coolant. :thumbup:

if you have a service record book then it should show service schedules near end pages .

Another Filter
 

There is another (often overlooked) oil filter you should change in the diesel X5. Dont ask me what its called but I know BMW modified it as there were problems with the original. Its a small plastic type with a mesh in the middle, located down near the rocker cover. Ill see if I can find the part number, as I had mine changed last service. Sorry about the poor description.

Black smoke when pedal floored is normal for X5 diesel engines. It is good practice to give it a little punch once a week to keep the engine tuned and remove the carbon deposits...

is it the breather filter? yep, have it checked.:thumbup:

yup punch it once in a while. that happened to me when my X haven't been used for about 2 months. lots of black smoke coming out even when idling. then after punching it a couple of times everyday, the smoke disappeared.:thumbup:
