Brake replacement recomm?
 

My Red BRAKE light just came on and the "check brake lining" message displays when I turn off my engine.* I have 37k miles and believe my front brakes need replacement.* I don't have time to DIY, so I will take it into an INDY.*My INDY quote is $600 for the brake job including labor.* Is this price high?

Should I purchase my brake stuff online and take it to them? I believe labor is 1.5 hrs = $135.00
Are the name brand brakes purchased on the internet better than the OEM ones my indy usually carries from the dealer?
What do I need to buy? Any recommendations for good quality brakes/rotors/etc?

I purchased brembo rotors and axxis ceramic pads from import replacement parts (www.importrp.com). They run bimmerforums.com special.
Since you have brake lights, you would need brake wear sensor(s).

Yeah they're going to love you bringing in all your own parts. While they are doing the job go have breakfast at the local diner, but make sure to bring all your own ingredients and have them cook it up...it should save you a few bucks off the menu MSRP.

You could have the front rotors/pads replaced at the dealer for $600 bucks. My limit for an indy should be around $400 bucks.

The dealer quoted me $735.00. I will look around for a good indy that is less than $450. Oregon doesn't have a much competition as CA, so our prices are usually about 10% higher on avarage. Thanks for the helpful info.

I like the idea of ceramic pads... I assume less dust and same braking ability? Thanks.

Just be aware that if you turn up with your own parts and if that's if your mechanic will install them, be aware that you probably won't get any sort of warranty on the finished job. That's a biggy for mine. Maybe take a look at what Seabass just did: Successful Brake DIY! Thanks!

I agree with Meister, it's a bit like taking your steak and veggies into a restaurant and asking them to cook it up for you. Highly unlikely but if you got food poisoning who you gonna blame ??

Agree w/ X Foomph. You're better off letting him do the job in full and haggling on the price than bringing in your own parts and pissing the guy off.

My friends INDY said it was fine to bring in my own stuff. Many of his customers do. He doesn't carry the Axxis ceramic brakes so I would have to bring them in myself. But he did stress that he will not warranty anything and he is just charging me the laborwork to install what I bring in. That is a good point you made :thumbup: that could help me decide, unlike some other unhelpful post which I won't waste my time with.:yawn:
