Considering an '03 3.0...need advice

Hi All. Sold our Honda SUV last year and now need an SUV again. I am considering a 2003 X5 3.0 with 50K miles. What are the main problem areas I should be looking for? Any help or suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Look for 2004+ - reliability is better and there were more options available (plus it has the face-lifted front end).

Take this from someone with 158K miles on an '01 3.0 - in the past few years I have spent maybe $15K in repairs.

With that said, I still love my X!!!!

Thanks. This one has 50k and my mechanic has been doing the servicing and repairs since it went out of warranty and gives it a very clean bill of health. I've just started looking at X5's but how much better is an '04 other than the face lift?

I personally like the pre facelifted look better. Always seemed a bit more tough looking! Don't get me wrong the face lift is awesome and if someone were to give me one I would take er'.....the face lift is very elegant as compared to the toughness of the pre facelift.....IMO ...of course!

I say go for it - especially if your INDY knows the vehichle and has been working on it.....I've got 96k and hope for another 100k..

Unless you're getting a stick, get a 04-06 instead. Revamped design, improved construction and a better auto tranny.

Problem areas
- water pump
- cam angle sensors
- CV boots
- window regulators
- valve cover gaskets (@80K)

While I prefer the facelift ... you can't replace knowing the true condition of the vehicle. If you trust your mechanic, I say go for it.

X5dawg ... Luv your X! Can't believe that has 160K on it!

At 158K that is like 20K miles a year--I would expect $15K in repairs given those miles. I have also have an '01 3.0 with only 86K miles and I've spent maybe $2000 in repairs in the past 3 years. Dragoncoach--so, I would say on an '03 with 50K miles you most likely will not have too much to worry about. Like you said have a good indy and you are ok.
